
Colgate Announces Class of 2012
HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Colgate University head women's
hockey coach Scott Wiley has announced the signing of four
student-athletes to join the team as the Class of 2012.
Wiley and his staff are bringing in one forward, two defenders and
one goaltender. Joining the Raiders are:
Krista Dermott - 5-8, F, Milton, Ont. (Brampton
Thunder)
Amanda Kirwan - 5-5, D, Mississauga, Ont. (Toronto
Aeros)
Kristi-Lynn Pollock - 5-5, D, Virden, Man.
(Balmoral Hall Blazers)
Kim Sass - 5-5, G, East Amherst, N.Y. (Buffalo
Bison)
"We are really excited about this incoming class," said Wiley.
"They are talented hockey players and great student-athletes that
should succeed here at Colgate. Assistant coaches Ryan Stone and
Cassandra Turner did a terrific job in selecting a stellar class.
We're looking forward to next season and competing for the ECAC
Hockey title."
Krista Dermott - 5-8, F, Milton, Ont. (Brampton
Thunder) Dermott has played two years with the Brampton
Junior Thunder of the Provincial Women's Hockey League (PWHL). The
Thunder finished eighth out of 17 in the league this past season,
with Dermott acting as an assistant captain. She played in 62 games
and scored 18 goals and added 23 assists for 41 points. Prior to
joining the Thunder, Dermott was a member of the Brampton
Canadettes of the North Metro Girls Hockey League (NMGHL). She was
a member of the Team Ontario blue squad that competed at the 2007
Under 18 Women's Hockey Championship, along with Amanda Kirwin.
She played one year for her high school varsity team, was a captain
and earned all-star honors as a senior. Dermott also played four
years of basketball, badminton, soccer and three years of
volleyball.
Dermott will graduate from Bishop Reading Secondary this spring.
Dermott said, "I chose Colgate because I like the hockey coaches
and the members of the team. When I visited Colgate, I liked the
campus community and saw the value of a Colgate
education."
Amanda Kirwan - 5-5, D, Mississauga, Ont. (Toronto
Aeros) Kirwan played for the Toronto Junior Aeros this
past year. She helped guide the Aeros, as team captain, to a
third-place finish in the PWHL. Kirwin played in 32 games and
tallied one goal and chipped in 10 assists as a defender. The squad
also was declared tournament champions of the Toronto Aeros Solid
Gold Showcase, and the Thanksgiving Showcase at Brown University.
Prior to joining the Aeros, Kirwan played two years with the
Oakville Jr. Ice (PWHL) and five years for the Mississauga Chiefs
(NMGHL).
She played for her varsity hockey team during her freshman and
senior years, and also lettered in basketball, track and field,
cross country, and volleyball.
Kirwan was a member of the Team Ontario blue squad along with
Krista Dermott that competed at the 2007 Under 18 Women's Hockey
Championship, and was an assistant captain.
Kirwan will graduate from Iona Catholic Secondary School this
spring.
Kirwan said, "I chose Colgate because of the academics, the women's
hockey program, location and reputation."
Kristi-Lynn Pollock - 5-5, D, Virden, Man. (Balmoral
Hall Blazers) Pollock played two years of varsity hockey
for Balmoral Hall. She was assistant captain her senior year. Prior
to joining the Blazers, Pollock played two seasons for the Westman
Wildcats.
She was a member of the Team Manitoba squad that won the bronze
medal at the 2007 Under 18 Women's Hockey Championship.
Pollock will graduate from Balmoral Hall this spring.
Pollock said, "I chose Colgate because it offered everything that I
was looking for."
Kim Sass - 5-5, G, East Amherst, N.Y. (Buffalo
Bison) Sass played on the JV boy's team at Williamsville
North High School during her sophomore and junior years, where the
Spartans posted a 25-10-3. The squad won the league championship in
2006. Her senior year she was on the varsity boy's team, and
collected a 17-7-2 record.
She played club hockey with the Buffalo Bison organization for the
last nine years. In 42 games this past year, she earned a 24-7-3
record with nine shutouts with the U19. She is credited with a 1.10
goals against average and a .948 save percentage. The previous year
with the U16, she collected a 30-2-4 record with 14 shutouts. She
posted an impeccable 0.89 goals against average and a .949 save
percentage in 43 games.
Sass helped the Bison to New York State championship titles in
2008, 2007, 2005, 2003 and 2000. The team was quarterfinalists in
the USA Hockey Nationals in 2008, 2006, 2005 and earned the bronze
medal in 2007 and 2003. In the Empire State Games, the Bison earned
gold in 2005, silver in 2006 and bronze in 2007.
Sass was selected to attend the 2006 USA Hockey Girls' Select 15/16
Player Development Camp and was chosen for the USA Hockey Nationals
Easton Skills Competition, where she was declared the winner of the
U16 overall goaltender competition.
Sass will graduate from Williamsville North High School in the
spring.
Sass said, "I chose Colgate because I felt it would provide the
best academic and hockey opportunity."
