For every local girl who has ever dreamed of lacing up a pair of
hockey skates and shooting a puck instead of a ringette ring can
thank Cathy Bureau for paving the way.
Bureau, who was inducted into the Nepean Sports Wall of Fame on
May 28, was one of the first girls to play organized female hockey
in the city. Thanks to her and her father, Frank Champion-Demers,
the first Nepean girls’ hockey league was created.
“Back in the 70’s, I wanted to play hockey, but there
was no hockey for girls,” said Bureau. “People were
always saying you can’t play because you’re taking away
from the guys.”
