The following article appeared October 28 on the Clarkson Web site.
The Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team closed out a
season-opening, six-game stretch against four of the top teams in
the country by sweeping Mercyhurst College, previously ranked 6th
in the nation, in the Golden Knights’ home opener at Cheel
Arena this past weekend. Despite being one-game under .500 with a
2-3-1 overall record, Clarkson, guided by first-year co-head
coaches Shannon and Matt Desrosiers, has cracked the top 10 of both
the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine and USCHO.com national polls for
the first time this season with a 10th-place rating.
Led by senior captain Kimberly McKenney (Smiths Falls, ONT) and
senior assistant captains Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) and
Courtney O’Connor (Chicago, ILL), Clarkson begins a four-game
road trip this weekend with a two-game series at Niagara
University.
The Knights relied upon productive efforts over the final 20
minutes of both games to gain their first wins of the 2008-09
campaign. In Friday’s 5-2 victory over Mercyhurst, the Green
and Gold tallied four unanswered goals in the third period. On
Saturday, the Knights out scored the Lakers 3-1 in the final frame
to earn a 4-2 triumph.
