Team Notes: Clarkson Hosts Mercyhurst in Home Opener
The following article appeared October 21 on the Clarkson Web site.
Despite four solid efforts on the road to start the season, the
Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team is still striving for
its first win of the 2008-09 campaign. Guided by first-year co-head
coaches Shannon and Matt Desrosiers, the Golden Knights played
three of the top teams in the country just about even on their home
ice, but have fallen just short in their bid for victory. The Green
and Gold, who are 0-3-1, have been close in each game, being
outscored by only a 10-6 margin.
After playing against nationally-ranked teams in New England to
start the month of October, Clarkson opens the home portion of the
schedule this weekend hosting sixth-ranked Mercyhurst College at
Cheel Arena.
This past weekend, the Knights dropped a pair of 2-1 decisions,
falling at 10th-ranked Boston University on Saturday and at
4th-ranked University of New Hampshire on Sunday. Slow starts have
hurt Clarkson, which has been out scored 8-0 in the first period
including falling into 2-0 deficits after the opening 20 minutes to
both the Terriers and Wildcats. The Green and Gold have also
experienced a string of bad luck, having several shots hit off
posts and having an apparent goal waved off in each game last
weekend. The game-winning goal for UNH was scored on a penalty
shot.
