Weekly Release: Road Action Sets Early Pace
ALBANY, N.Y. - Five ECAC Hockey teams began play in the 2011-12
season last weekend with four of the five teams in action playing
in non-conference road games. Some of the highlights included
Quinnipiac and Rensselaer each posting 1-0 shutout wins and St.
Lawrence stopping rival Clarkson, by a count of 6-3.
Clarkson 3 at Vermont 3 (ot) and At St. Lawrence 6,
Clarkson 3
*The Golden Knights trailed 3-0 just 12 minutes after the opening
faceoff against the Catamounts before regrouping and dominating the
second and third periods.
*Clarkson outshot Vermont 40-27, including a 26-14 margin over the
second and third periods. Both teams had two shots apiece in the
five-minute overtime session.
*Sophomore Erica Howe made 24 saves for the Golden Knights. Roxanne
Douville posted 37 saves for the Catamounts.
*Six different players scored goals for the Scarlet and Brown,
including senior Vanessa Emond and sophomore Mel Desrochers, who
also each added a pair of assists as the Saints doubled-up North
Country rival Clarkson, 6-3.
*There were a total of 21 minor penalties called in the
Saturday’s contest, 10 for Clarkson. The Golden Knights were
2-of-10 on the power-play, while SLU was 2-of-9. The Saints outshot
the Golden Knights 36-32.
At No. 8 Mercyhurst 4, No. 9 Quinnipiac 0 & No. 9

*Bobcats’ junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti turned away 30
shots in the loss, while her counterpart Hillary Pattenden made 20
saves for Mercyhurst.
*Sophomore Kelly Babstock led Quinnipiac with five shots in the
game, followed by junior Brittany Lyons' three shots. Overall, the
Bobcats were outshot, 34-20.
*Four different Lakers found the back of the net for the
Lakers.
*The Lakers were 1-for-3 with the player advantage while the
Bobcats failed in three similar chances.
Saturday’s 1-0 victory by the Bobcats was the first-ever over
the Lakers in team history (1-11-0).
*Junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti made 24 saves en route to her
15th career shutout, leading Quinnipiac (1-1) to its first victory
of the season.
At No. 4 Minnesota 6, Union 1 &âSt.
Cloud St. 4 vs. Union 1
*Freshman Camille Corbin tallied her first-career goal Friday night
in the Dutchwomen's opening game of the 2011-12 season in the
East/West Showcase.
*Team captains Sarah Erickson and Jen Schoullis led the way for the
Golden Gophers as Erickson (1g, 3a) tallied four points on the
night while Schoullis (2g, 1a) had three points.
*Minnesota gave Union five power-play chances in the game, but
Minnesota killed four of five chances. Minnesota had three
power-play opportunities and converted on one.
*St. Cloud defeated Union by a score of 4-1 on Saturday to pick up
the first win of the season.
*Freshman Christine Valente scored for the Dutchwomen at the 5:37
mark of the second period with assists going to Bryanne Panchuk and
Chelsey Heinhuis. It was Valente's first career point and goal.
*The final shot count was 27-18 in favor of the Huskies.
Rensselaer 3 at Connecticut 3 (ot) & Rensselaer 1 at
Connecticut 0
*Junior forward Taylor Horton tallied two goals, including the
game-tying marker at 16:22 of the third period to help lift
Rensselaer to a 3-3 draw against Connecticut at Freitas Arena in
the season opener.
*RPI finished with a 24-17 advantage in shots for the game,
backstopped by a 14-save performance from Brianna Piper in her
collegiate debut. Alexandra Garcia had 21 saves for the
Huskies.
*In the extra frame, UConn outshot RPI 3-0, but was unable to
capitalize.
*Backed by a 20-save shutout performance from rookie Kelly O'Brien
and senior captain Alisa Harrison's game-winning goal with nine
seconds left in the game, the Engineers defeated Connecticut, 1-0
at Freitas Arena. It marks the first win of the season for
the Engineers, who are now 1-0-1.
*O'Brien was stellar for the Engineers in her first career start,
stopping five shots in the first period, nine in the second and six
in the final stanza. Her counterpart, Nicole Paniccia had 18
saves for the Huskies.
