Weekend Update: High Drama
ALBANY, N.Y. - In regular-season play Friday two out of the four
ECAC Hockey teams in action (Clarkson and Colgate) found the win
column, while two (Rensselaer and Union) were narrowly defeated.
The lone other League team to hit the ice - Cornell - rolled in its
exhibition contest.
At Colgate 7, Lindenwood 2
*Colgate scored four goals in an eight minute stretch in the first
period.
*Six different Raiders scored a goal in the win. Junior Brittany
Phillips led the team with two goals and one assist.
*The Lady Lions could not convert on any of their eight power-play
opportunities, while Colgate was one-for-six on the power-play.
Clarkson 3 at Syracuse 2
*Senior Gabrielle Kosziwka scored twice and sophomore Jamie Lee
Rattray connected for the game-winner as Clarkson edged Syracuse in
the first night of the home-and-home series.
*Syracuse held a significant advantage in shots with a 36-19
margin, but sophomore goaltender Erica Howe was up to the task with
a 34-save effort.
*While neither team could capitalize on the power-play (Clarkson:
0-of-5, Syracuse: 0-of-4), the Orange won 35-of-59 draws.
At Northeastern 2, Union 1:
*Junior tri-captain Casey Pickett netted both goals for
Northeastern, while reigning ECAC Hockey Player of the Week
Stefanie Thomson scored the lone goal for Union.
*Not lost in Union’s defeat was the superlative play of
Shenae Lundberg, who stopped 38 Northeastern shots, including a
breakaway effort late in the third from sophomore Claire
Santostefano that would have iced the game.
*The Huskies move to a perfect 3-0-0 on their season-opening
four-game homestand, and continue to lead the NCAA Div. I RPI
rankings.
At Niagara 5, Rensselaer 4 (ot)
*Head coach Josh Sciba captured his first win as head coach at
Niagara in dramatic fashion when sophomore forward Kristin Richard
capitalized on a penalty shot in overtime to beat Rensselaer 5-4
Friday night with :52 seconds left in overtime. It was
Richards’ second goal of the game.
*In goal, Sarah Moses earned the victory with 14 stops, while
Brianna Piper made 27 saves in the loss for the Engineers.
*Forward Jordan Smelker (1g, 1a) and defender Madison Marzario (2a)
had multiple-point nights for the Engineers.
At Cornell 6, Brampton 0 (Ex.)
*Freshman Jillian Saulnier started her Cornell career on the right
foot, scoring two goals to lead the team. Rebecca Johnston, Laura
Fortino and Brianne Jenner each had two assists.
*Brampton played undisciplined hockey, committing 11 penalties
including a five-minute major late in the game for contact to the
head. Cornell committed just three penalties and was perfect on the
kill.
*Senior goalie Amanda Mazzotta started the night for Cornell and
recorded 31 minutes of shutout play, saving 10 shots. Lauren
Slebodnick picked up where Mazzotta left off, stopping 11 Brampton
shots in her 29 minutes and change.
