Weekend Update: Strong Defenses Spark Wins

ALBANY, N.Y. - Last night’s action in ECAC Hockey women’s play showcased solid goaltending and fundamental defenses. Four out of the five contests were decided by one goal with two netminders posting shutouts and the other three winning goaltenders only surrendering one goal each.

St. Lawrence 2 at Rensselaer 1
*The Scarlet and Brown, which outshot RPI 32-25 in the game, improve to 4-3-2 overall on the season and 1-2-0 in conference. Meanwhile the Engineers fall to 2-6-3.
*St. Lawrence won the special teams battle Friday, as it finished 1-for-6 on the power-play while holding Rensselaer scoreless at 0-for-5.
*Forwards Vanessa Emond and Kelly Sabatine found the back of the net for the Saints, while Eleeza Cox scored the Engineers’ lone goal on the night.

At Union 2, Clarkson 1
*Despite a 34-to-19 advantage in shots, the Golden Knights could not capitalize on its chances and suffered it first ever loss to Union.*Clarkson’s Erica Howe finished with 17 saves, while Union’s Kate Gallagher posted 33 stops in her first action of the season. Both teams were 0-of-4 on the power-play.*Senior Emilie Arseneault scored a short handed goal late into the second period to give Union a 2-1 conference win over Clarkson.

At Princeton 1, Brown 0
*The score did not reflect how the game was played as Princeton dominated the ice with 39 shots while Brown had nine.
*Princeton senior netminder Rachel Weber would make all nine stops in her first shutout of the season, and 10th of her career. Aubree Moore finished with 38 saves for the Bears.
*The lone goal of the game came at 6:24 in the second period when a player advantage for the Tigers gave Princeton the extra inch it needed. Sally Butler and Denna Laing combined to find Oliva Mucha for the score.

At Niagara 2, Colgate 1
*Freshman Miriam Drubel scored the Raiders' lone goal during a power-play advantage late in the second period.
*Niagara held a 25-21 shooting advantage and was 1-for-4 on the power play while the Raiders went 1-for-3 with the extra skater.
*Senior Kimberly Sass had 23 saves for Colgate while Abby Ryplanski had 18 for the Purple Eagles.
*The Purple Eagles are currently tied with Mercyhurst for the longest unbeaten streak in the nation (3-0-2). 


At Quinnipiac 3, Yale 0
*Senior defender Jordan Elkins netted her third goal in as many games and junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti collected her third shutout of the season last night.
*Victoria Vigilanti had a relatively quite night in net, turning away all 13 shots faced in the contest. Genny Ladiges made 41 saves in goal for Yale.
*Jordan Elkins (1G, 1A), Nicole Kosta (2A), and Amanda Colin (1G, 1A) each had multiple-point nights for the Bobcats.
