League Standouts Represent Canada at 4 Nations Cup
CALGARY, Alta. – Four Cornell standouts and two former League standouts are among a group of 23 players selected to the roster of Canada's National Women's Team for the upcoming 4 Nations Cup, Hockey Canada announced Monday.
Cornell junior defensemen Laura Fortino and Lauriane Rougeau, sophomore forward Brianne Jenner and senior forward Rebecca Johnston will all make the trip to Nykoping, Sweden, for the six-day tournament from Nov. 9-14. Big Red head coach Doug Derraugh has also been named an assistant for the competition.
Joining the Big Red contingent are former Harvard goaltender Christina Kessler and Dartmouth forward Gillian Apps.
The 4 Nations Cup features the top four countries in the world – Canada, Finland, Sweden and the United States – and is played every year. This year marks the 16th annual tournament, where Canada is the defending champion and has won 12 times overall.
The 2011 4 Nations Cup roster includes three goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards, who were selected following Canada’s National Women’s Team September Camp/Fall Festival, which took place September 17-25 in Calgary, Alta.
“We're very excited about the roster we've assembled for this year's 4 Nations Cup,” said Dan Church, head coach of Canada's National Women's Team. “Our team has a great combination of fresh faces and seasoned veterans, which will be pivotal in developing our player pool, and we can't wait for them to take to the ice in Sweden to defend Canada's gold medal.”
The 2011 4 Nations Cup will serve as an evaluation opportunity for Canada’s National Women’s Team coaching staff and Hockey Canada scouts, led by head scout of National Women’s Team programs Melody Davidson.
