No. 7 Lakers Hold Off Saints
Nov. 22: The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team dropped
a non-conference contest to nationally-ranked No. 7 Mercyhurst
College in Erie, PA on Tuesday night by the score of 5-3.
First-year student Ellie Williams scored a pair of goals for the
Scarlet and Brown, which had two leads against the Lakers.
Mercyhurst improves to 9-2-0 on the year having outshot the Saints
by a 37-19 margin. Meanwhile, St. Lawrence falls to .500 on
the year at 6-6-3 despite a 32-save performance by sophomore goalie
Caitlyn Lahonen.
"We had some good momentum early but Mercyhurst was able to
withstand and strike on a few plays to get back in the game," said
St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "After going down 4-2,
we played our game and gained some momentum back. We have
another chance tomorrow to end this stretch on a winning note."
The two teams combined for five power play goals in the contest,
including both first period tallies. After junior Kayla
Sullivan got the Saints on the scoreboard up 1-0 at 6:31 of the
first, Lauren Jones answered for the home team with the extra
skater at 15:51.
Williams would waste little time putting the visitors back on top
only 1:24 into the second stanza. The rookie took a feed from
classmate Amanda Boulier and beat Laker netminder Hillary Pattenden
to put St. Lawrence ahead 2-1. Sophomore Mel Desrochers also
assisted on the opening goal of the second.
Mercyhurst would steal the momentum back only 2:30 later when Molly
Byrne scored on Lahonen at 3:54, with assists going to Christine
Bestland and Shelby Bram. Christie Cicero would then propel
the Lakers into the third period with a power play goal with only
six seconds remaining, giving Mercyhurst its first lead of the game
at 3-2 after two.
Cicero's goal would swing the play in the home team's favor, as
Bestland made it 4-2 only 1:08 into the third period. Both
Shelby and Bailey Bram assisted on what proved to be the
game-winning goal.
Williams would keep St. Lawrence's hopes alive at 4:36 of the
third, as she picked up her second power play goal of the game to
bring the Saints back to within a goal at 4-3. However, the
visitors were unable to push another goal past Pattenden, and
Bailey Bram would score an empty net goal with 1:23 left in
regulation to bring the game to its final score of 5-3.
Pattenden closed with 16 saves to earn the win for
Mercyhurst. St. Lawrence finished 3-for-5 on the power play,
while the Lakers were 2-for-5.
The Saints will look to earn a split with Mercyhurst tomorrow,
Wednesday, November 23 when the two teams battle again at
3:00pm.
