Smith Nets Three in Win Over Colgate
Jan. 28: St. Lawrence University sophomore Rylee Smith had a
five-point game including a hat trick in the second period, while
linemates Karell Emard and Kelly Sabatine each added a goal as the
women's hockey team scored a 6-0 victory over Colgate University on
Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence improved to 15-8-4 (9-5-2) on the year, while rookie
netminder Carmen MacDonald earned her third career shutout with a
20-save performance. The Raiders fall to 8-18-1 (3-12-1)
having given up three power play goals to the Scarlet and
Brown.
"I thought we responded well after a physically and mentally
draining game against Cornell," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris
Wells. "Carmen kept us in it early as Colgate took it to
us. We got a few good bounces our way which helped us take
the momentum in the second period."
Colgate did own the majority of scoring chances in the first
period, outshooting St. Lawrence 12-7. However, with
MacDonald posting a clean period, the Saints were able to
capitalize and take a 1-0 lead at 3:49. Emard scored her 10th
of the year, collecting a loose puck in front of Colgate goalie
Kimberly Sass and firing a wrist shot into the net. Smith and
Sabatine assisted on what would prove to be the game-winning
goal.
After being outplayed in many aspects in the first period, St.
Lawrence rebounded with a great stanza in the second. The
Saints outshot Colgate 22-5, and Smith did the damage with three
straight goals. She opened the period with her 13th goal a
mere :07 seconds into play, as her shot bounced off a Colgate
defender and past Sass. She then scored power play goals at
13:25 and 14:41 to give her team a 4-0 lead. Senior Alley
Bero assisted on both goals, while Sabatine and classmate Brooke
Fernandez also earned helpers in the second.
With the game in hand, the Scarlet and Brown would tack on a pair
of insurance goals in the third period. Sabatine scored her
12th of the year at 10:00, collecting a pass from Smith at the top
of the goal mouth and beating Sass for a power play tally.
First-year student Jacqueline Wand then capped the game's scoring
at 6-0 with her second goal of the second, scoring on a rebound at
19:41. Junior Jamie Goldsmith and senior assistant captain
Josee Belanger assisted on the final goal.
St. Lawrence finished with a 40-20 advantage in shots and a solid
3-for-7 effort on the power play. Sass made 34 saves, while
the Raiders closed with a 0-for-2 mark on the power play.
The Saints will play their final two home games of the regular
season next weekend, Friday and Saturday, February 3 and 4.
St. Lawrence will face Yale at 7:00pm on Friday, then host Brown on
"Senior Day" at 4:00pm on Saturday.
