Bellamy Collects Third Straight Shutout
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior assistant captain Laura Bellamy
extended her shutout streak to three games and 11 total periods as
the No. 8/9 Harvard women's hockey team skated past league opponent
Brown, 3-0, Saturday at Meehan Auditorium. The win moves Harvard
(14-6-1, 11-4-1 ECAC) into second place in ECAC Hockey standings,
one point ahead of Quinnipiac.
The last time Harvard recorded three-straight shutouts was the
2007-08 season, when the Crimson blanked Colgate (4-0), Boston
College (7-0) and St. Lawrence (2-0) in consecutive contests.
Harvard is also undefeated against Brown in the last 22
matchups.
Less than 24 hours after coming a pipe shy of recording a hat
trick, Kaitlin Spurling showed she still had a nose for the net,
getting Harvard out to a 1-0 lead just past the halfway point of
the first period. Spurling led a 2-on-1 charge into the Brown zone
with Kalley Armstrong and after Spurling slid a pass to the
sophomore, Armstrong tipped it right back with a smooth one-touch
pass that Spurling deposited at 11:19.
The goals in bunches trend continued as the Crimson struck again
less than a minute later. Another savvy display of passing saw
Jillian Dempsey and Elizabeth Parker feed a wide-open Sarah Edney,
who whipped home her fourth goal of the season at the 12:09 mark.
Harvard finished the period with a 12-8 advantage in shots, and
goalie Laura Bellamy stayed rock-solid in net to keep the hosts off
the board.
It was all Harvard in the second period and while the Crimson added
just one goal in the frame, the majority of play took place in the
Brown zone. Just past the eight minute mark of the second, Spurling
collected her second goal of the game to give Harvard a 3-0 edge.
Edney flung a pass to Josephine Pucci along the blue line and
Pucci's shot was redirected by Spurling with her back to the goal,
and the puck trickled past Aubree Moore at 8:10 of the second.
Harvard outshot the Bears, 11-2, in the final period and doubled up
Brown in shots for the game, 36-18. Spurling collected her
second-straight game with two goals and Edney posted a goal and an
assist in the victory.
Up next for the Crimson is the first round of the 34th annual
Women's Beanpot, hosted this year by Boston University at Walter
Brown Arena. Harvard takes on the host Terriers Tuesday in the
second game of the day, slated to begin at 8:00 p.m.
