Raiders Fall at St. Lawrence
CANTON, N.Y. (1/28/12) – The Colgate women's hockey team
dropped its second ECAC Hockey matchup of the weekend on Saturday
afternoon when it fell to St. Lawrence 6-0 in Appleton Arena.
Senior Kimberly Sass had 34 saves in the game. She now has a total
of 714 saves this season.
St. Lawrence came out to an early lead in the first period, scoring
the opening goal just 3:49 into play to take a 1-0 lead. Despite
creating majority of the shots on net and holding the Saints
scoreless in the first power play opportunity of the game, Colgate
(8-18-1, 3-12-1 ECAC Hockey) was unable to find an equalizer in the
first twenty minutes of play.
Trailing by one, the Raiders were determined to turn things around
in the second frame. However, this time around it was St. Lawrence
that created most of the scoring opportunities, outshooting Colgate
22-5 in the second stanza. The shooting advantage gave way to three
goals for the Saints. The first tally was just seven seconds into
play, the second was at the 13:25 mark and the third was less than
a minute later, to increase St. Lawrence's lead to 4-0.
The Saints then went on to score twice more in the final period to
secure a 6-0 shutout win.
Kimberly Sass had 34 saves for the Raiders while St. Lawrence's
Carmen MacDonald had 20. Colgate was not able to score on its two
power play opportunities while the Saints went 3-for-7 on the extra
skater advantage.
The Raiders will resume play at home next weekend with a pair of
ECAC Hockey contests against Union and Rensselaer on Feb. 3 and 4
respectively. Friday's game against Union will launch Colgate's
2012 Autism Awareness Project with its Light Up Starr Rink Blue
event.
