HAMDEN, Conn. –Sophomore forward Erica Uden Johansson
(Sundsvall, Sweden) led the attack for the Quinnipiac women’s
ice hockey team on Friday evening against Syracuse, netting the
game-winning goal and providing assists on the two additional
scores, as the Bobcats skated to a 3-0 shutout victory over
the non-conference opponent Orange at HighPoint Solutions Arena at
the TD Bank Sports Center. Freshman goaltender Chelsea Laden
(Lakeville, Minn.) played a superb game in net, making her first
career shutout for the Bobcats, who improve to 15-9-2 overall.
Syracuse falls to 8-16-3 with the loss.
Quinnipiac netted its first goal of the contest at the 9:05 mark
into the first period on a crafty finish by Uden Johansson. Junior
forward Breann Frykas (East St. Paul, Manitoba) was the catalyst
for the play, intercepting a Syracuse pass in the Bobcats’
offensive zone. Frykas and Uden Johansson then skated in on a
two-on-one advantage, before Frykas dished the puck to Uden
Johansson who buried the left-handed shot for her fifth goal of the
season. Frykas earned her sixth helper on the year.
The second period was a stalemate of sorts, for neither team could
break through for a goal during the 20 minutes of action. Each
goalie stood strong for their respective teams, as Laden turned
away seven shots in the frame for Quinnipiac, while sophomore
goalie Jenesica Drinkwater made nine saves for Syracuse.
Overall, Laden stopped 19-of-19 shots for her fourth-straight
victory and first career-clean sheet. Drinkwater made a game-high
35 saves in goal for the Orange.
The Bobcats opened up its lead in the third period on two goals
separated by just over four minutes of action. Uden Johansson
helped Quinnipiac increase its lead to 2-0 at the 5:14 mark into
the final period of play, sliding a pass to freshman forward Nicole
Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) in stride where she ripped a quick
snap shot past the stunned Drinkwater. The goal was Kosta’s
fourth of the year, while the assist for Uden Johansson was also
her fourth.
Kosta’ goal was quickly followed by senior assistant captain
Kate Wheeler’s (Oakville, Ontario) rebounded score,
increasing Quinnipiac’s lead, 3-0, at the 9:16 mark into the
final frame. Wheeler found herself in perfect position following a
saved shot by junior defender Felica Vieweg (Port Orange, Fla.).
She collected the puck and found an opening in the pads of
Drinkwater, notching her fifth goal (fourth goal in the last five
games) of the season.
Each team went 0-for-3 on their respective power play opportunities
on the evening.
Quinnipiac looks for its second win against the Orange in as many
days, when it returns to the ice tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, Jan.
28 at 4 p.m. at HighPoint Solutions Arena the TD Bank Sports
Center.
