Nanji & Holdcroft Lead Big Green to Win
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Junior Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ontario)
and sophomore Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led the
10th-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team to a 3-1 victory at Brown
on Friday. Nanji scored the Big Green's first two goals and
Holdcroft stopped 25 shots to improve the team to 13-6-2 overall,
9-4-2 in ECAC Hockey and 3-2-1 in the Ivy League. The Bears fell to
7-8-7 overall, 4-7-4 in the conference and 2-4-0 in the Ancient
Eight.
Dartmouth fell behind early in the game when Alena Polenska scored
the game's first goal 2:48 into the opening period. It would be the
only tally of the game for the Bears as Holdcroft held Brown in
check the rest of the way. The Pittsburgh native made nine saves in
the first, five in the second and 11 in the final frame when the
Bears where peppering the net in attempt to tie the game.
With Holdcroft making save-after-save it gave the Big Green offense
the opportunity to overcome the one-score deficit. It didn't take
long for Dartmouth to tie the game with Nanji tallying her seventh
goal of the season 7:32 into the first. The defenseman followed
that goal with the game-winning goal four minutes later for her
eighth goal of the year. It marked the first time this season Nanji
scored more than one goal in a game. The teams went into the first
intermission with the Big Green leading, 2-1.
Neither team scored in the second and the two goaltenders kept the
contest close until late in the third. After Brown pulled
goaltender Katie Jamieson with 1:15 left in the third, senior Erica
Dobos (Bethel Park, Pa.) scored an empty-net goal 10 seconds later
off an assist from senior Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alberta). It was
the fifth goal of the season for Dobos and the 11th assist for
Fischer.
The Big Green committed three penalties in the game, while Brown
was whistled for two. Dartmouth went 0-for-2 on the power play and
the Bears went 0-for-3. Holdcroft finished with 25 saves and
Jamieson had 30. It was the fifth win for Dartmouth in its last six
games.
The Big Green returns to action on Saturday at Yale at 4 p.m.
