Raiders Set Back By Clarkson
POTSDAM, N.Y. (1/27/12) – The Colgate women's hockey team
experienced a 4-1 ECAC Hockey setback to Clarkson on Friday night
at Cheel Arena.
Sophomore Rachel Walsh scored the Raiders' long goal with assists
from classmate Shannon Doyle and junior Brittany Phillips.
Clarkson came out to a strong start in the first period, taking a
flurry of shots on net as it searched for the opening goal. Despite
being outshot 10-1 in the first seven minutes of play, Colgate
(8-17-1, 3-11-1 ECAC Hockey) was able to earn a pair of extra
skater advantages midway through the period however, it was the
Golden Knights that were able to capitalize on their second power
play opportunity to take a 1-0 lead at the 16:28 mark. Clarkson
then found a second tally less than three minutes later to improve
its lead to two goals at the end of the first 20 minutes of
play.
The Golden Knights extended the scoring margin to three goals in
the second stanza, recording their third goal and second power play
tally of the game just 3:56 into play. Both teams continued to play
a physical game throughout the period, earning three more extra
skater advantages between them, but neither one could
capitalize.
With the score at 3-0 in Clarkson's favor going into the final
period, the Raiders were determined to get on the scoreboard. A
checking penalty on the Golden Knights at the 4:57 mark gave
Colgate its sixth and final power play opportunity of the game and
this time around, the Raiders were able to find the back of the net
with just 30 second left in the extra skater advantage to reduce
the score to 3-1. However, the Golden Knights were then able to
find a power play goal at the 11:04 mark to eventually win the game
4-1.
Senior Kimberly Sass had 29 saves for the Raiders, with 11 in the
first frame, while Erica Howe had 14 stops for Clarkson. Colgate
went 1-for-6 on the power play while the Golden Knights scored on
three of their eight extra skater opportunities.
The Raiders will resume play tomorrow (Jan. 28) afternoon when they
travel to St. Lawrence for an ECAC Hockey matchup at 4 p.m. in
Canton, N.Y.
