Saints Skate to Tie with Golden Knights
Jan. 21: The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team picked
up one point in the ECAC Hockey standings on Saturday, as the
Saints skated to a 1-1 tie with Clarkson University at Cheel
Arena.
The Saints (14-7-4, 8-4-2) saw an eight-game win streak come to an
end, but remained unbeaten since November 23. Clarkson, which
scored the tying goal in the final minutes of the third period,
moves to 14-7-5 (8-4-1) despite having been outshot 30-25.
The Saints came out of the gate attacking on Saturday, as they
controlled the majority of offensive chance in the first
period. Their efforts led to a 1-0 lead at 15:39 when captain
Karell Emard scored her ninth goal of the season. Emard was
able to snap a shot past Clarkson goalie Erica Howe and inside the
far post to get the visitors on top, with assists going to
linemates Rylee Smith and Kelly Sabatine.
The second period was owned by the goaltenders, as Howe and St.
Lawrence rookie Carmen MacDonald both had several key saves.
With each team earning seven shots on goal, each netminder was
perfect in the frame, including a sprawled-out save on a rebound by
MacDonald to keep the Saints head entering the third period.
Clarkson had the better of the play in the third period, as the
Knights stepped up the attack and outshot their opponents,
9-7. Their pressure led to the tying goal at 12:46, as
Danielle Skirrow banged home a rebound from the top of the crease
to knot the score at 1-1. The goal, which was Skirrow's 13th
of the year, was assisted by Jamie Lee Rattray and Gabrielle
Kosziwka.
The Golden Knights were energized by the tying goal, and had the
best opportunity to win the game in regulation as a two-on-one
chance in the final minute got past MacDonald, but hit the near
post to send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, it was St. Lawrence that owned the play,
outshooting Clarkson 5-1. Emard nearly gave her team the win
on a wrap-around try from behind the net, while classmate Vanessa
Emond had a breakaway try get gloved by Howe, allowing Clarkson to
escape with a 1-1 tie.
Howe finished with 29 saves for the host team, while MacDonald
closed with 24. St. Lawrence was 0-for-5 against the nation's
best penalty kill unit, though the Saints' penalty kill kept
Clarkson without a power play goal on Saturday as well
(0-for-6).
St. Lawrence will be in action again next weekend, Friday and
Saturday, January 27 and 28, when they host nationally-ranked No. 3
Cornell and Colgate at Appleton Arena. The Saints and Big Red
square off on Friday night at 7:00pm.
