Third-Period Flurry Sends No. 9 Harvard Past Colgate
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Clinging to a one-goal lead heading
into the third period, the No. 9 Harvard women's hockey team netted
three insurance goals, including two in the first minute of the
period, to top Colgate, 4-0, Saturday at Bright Hockey Center. The
shutout is Harvard's (12-6-1, 9-4-1 ECAC) second against Colgate
(8-16-1, 3-10-1 ECAC) this season, as the Crimson won the first
game in the series, 2-0.
After two periods of play passed with a multitude of penalties and
just one goal, Harvard cleared its throat and gained significant
breathing room in the opening minute of the third. Lyndsey Fry
carried the puck behind the Colgate net and handed it off to
Jillian Dempsey. The junior proceeded to slip a pass to Gina
McDonald, and the sophomore's shot bested goalie Kimberly Sass for
a 2-0 lead just 17 seconds into the period. Before the crowd was
finished celebrating, Harvard scored again, with Dempsey sneaking a
shot past Sass on an unassisted effort 15 seconds later.
Both teams took a pair of penalties down the stretch in the third,
but Harvard would add one more before the final buzzer. Josephine
Pucci jostled the puck away from a Colgate skater and fed Fry who
sped down the ice and into the Colgate zone. Fry got the puck back
to Pucci on a well-timed pass and all Pucci had to do was redirect
the puck into the open net to cap the 4-0 final.
The Crimson defense was rock solid early, holding Colgate without a
shot through the first 12 minutes of the contest. Harvard managed a
few chances on Sass but came up empty, even on an early power play.
It looked as though the teams would enter the first break in a 0-0
deadlock, but the hosts broke through with just over a minute to
play in the first period.
Kalley Armstrong gathered the puck near the penalty box and worked
down the boards until she was even with the faceoff circle in the
Colgate zone. Armstrong whipped the puck back to a charging Marissa
Gedman, and while Gedman's shot was turned away by Sass, Fry was
there to put home the rebound for a 1-0 lead at 18:56 of the
first.
The Crimson racked up four penalties in the second period but the
penalty kill unit was flawless, keeping Colgate out of the
offensive zone and even creating a few looks on the Raider net.
Colgate was whistled for a pair of penalties as well in the second,
but the puck stayed out of the net and Harvard took its 1-0 lead
into the third.
Fry finished the game with three points on a goal and two assists,
while Dempsey also tallied a multi-point game with a goal and a
helper. Laura Bellamy turned away 20 Raider shots for her third
shutout of the season and second in the past four games. For the
game, the Crimson outshot the Raiders, 35-20.
Harvard hits the road in its next game when it travels to New
Haven, Conn., Friday for a 7 p.m., showdown with Ivy rival
Yale.
