Fischer Scores Game-Winner with 25 Seconds Left in Overtime
HANOVER, N.H. — With only 25 seconds left in overtime,
senior Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alberta) netted the game-winning goal
to give the 10th-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team a 4-3 win
over Colgate on Friday at Thompson Arena.
Junior Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Quebec) brought the puck down
the left side of the ice opposite the benches with under a minute
remaining. She circled behind the Raiders' net and flipped the puck
over the sprawled Colgate goaltender, Kimberly Sass. Senior Jenna
Hobeika (Alpine, N.J.) knocked the puck down in front of the
crease, and Fischer batted it in as Sass dove to make the save. The
victory moved Dartmouth to 12-5-2 overall and 8-3-2 in ECAC Hockey.
The loss dropped the Raiders to 8-15-1 and 3-9-1 in the
conference
The Big Green swarmed Fischer on the ice after a game Dartmouth
should have won easily. The team dominated in the statistical
categories, taking 47 shots compared to 17 for Colgate. The Big
Green won 45 of the 61 faceoffs and committed only two penalties to
the Raiders' eight. Dartmouth finished 1-for-8 on the power play,
while the Raiders went 1-for-2.
Dartmouth had a 3-0 lead 4:29 into the second period, but Colgate
never gave up and eventually tied the game with seven minutes left
in the third. After a Dartmouth shot was saved by Sass, the Raiders
went hard on the counter attack with Brittany Phillips driving down
the left side. She cut to the center of the ice just past the Big
Green blue line and took a shot at the goal. Big Green goaltender
Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, Pa.) blocked the puck back out to
the left, but Jenna Klynstra was right there to slam home the
rebound. It was Klynstra's second goal of the game and the fourth
of the season.
The teams each had opportunities once the score was tied, including
each gaining a power-play chance, but were not able to find the net
in regulation. Sass finished the game with 43 saves and the Colgate
defense blocked 22 shots. Holdcroft made 14 saves in her ninth
victory of the season.
Not only did Fischer end the game, but she also started off the
scoring for the Big Green early in the first. With Dartmouth on the
power play, senior Kelly Foley (South Boston, Mass.) left the puck
for Dumais on the near side in the Colgate zone. Dumais sent a pass
to the front of the crease and Fischer quickly redirected the puck
into the left side of the net, 7:20 into the opening stanza.
The Big Green scored their second goal seven minutes later when
freshman Karlee Odland (Vauxhall, Alberta) knocked in a Dumais
rebound. Dartmouth stretched the lead to 3-0, 4:29 into the second,
on junior Margaux Sharp's (Carleton Place, Ontario) second goal of
the season. Sharp took a slapshot in front of the Dartmouth bench
that deflected off a Colgate skate and past a sliding Sass.
Fischer and Dumais each finished the game with three points.
Fischer tallied two goals and an assist and Dumais had three
helpers. It marked the fourth straight win for the Big Green and
the team is unbeaten in its last eight games.
Dartmouth hosts third-ranked Cornell on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Big
Green won 5-4 in Ithaca earlier this season.
