Raiders Comeback Falls Short
HANOVER, N.H. (1/20/12) - The Colgate women's hockey team was
able to erase a three-goal deficit and force the game into
overtime. However, it was not enough to topple No. 10/10 Dartmouth,
which was able to secure the 4-3 win with just 25 seconds left in
extra period.
Junior Jenna Klynstra led the Raiders with two goals in the game
while sophomore Jocelyn Simpson tallied one. Junior Brittany
Phillips also had two points with an assist in both of Klynstra's
goals. In goal, the team had yet another impressive performance
from senior Kimberly Sass who recorded 43 saves, 18 of which were
in the second period.
Colgate (8-15-1, 3-9-1 ECAC Hockey) began the first period with a
power play advantage just 30 seconds into play courtesy of a
tripping penalty on Dartmouth. Despite the two-minute disadvantage,
the Big Green was then able to turn things around and find a power
play goal at the 7:20 mark to take the 1-0 lead. For the next seven
minutes, Dartmouth controlled majority of the offense, firing a
series of shots at Sass and eventually finding the back of the net
at the 14:32 mark to increase its lead to 2-0 going into the second
period.
Both teams came out playing a more attacking game in the second
frame. The Big Green struck first with an early goal at the 4:29
mark to extend its lead to three. Not discouraged, Colgate
responded with its first goal of the game from Simpson at the 6:26
mark to reduce the score to 3-1. Sophomore Megan Wickens was
credited with an assist. The goal gave the Raiders the offensive
surge they needed, earning them a second tally midway through the
stanza to put the game within one. Klysntra scored the goal with
help from Phillips and sophomore Rachel Walsh. Startled by the
back-to-back goals, Dartmouth took control of the game, outshooting
Colgate 19-5 in the period but the Big Green could not find the
insurance goal it was desperately searching for.
The intensity picked up in the third frame with both teams playing
a more physical game. Despite having three penalties called against
them, the Raiders were able to find an equalizer after trailing the
Big Green for over 53 minutes to send the game into overtime.
Klynstra found her second goal of the night at the 13:12 mark with
an assist from Phillips to tie the game at 3-3.
Colgate continued to play a strong game, hoping that it would carry
its scoring momentum into the overtime period. However, it was
Dartmouth that held a 7-0 shooting advantage that was rewarded with
the game-winning tally at the 4:35 mark of the five-minute frame to
secure the 4-3 win.
Sass had 43 saves while Lindsay Holdcroft had 14 stops for the Big
Green. The Raiders went scoreless in their two extra skater
opportunities while holding Dartmouth to just one tally in its
eight power play chances.
Colgate will resume ECAC Hockey play tomorrow (Jan. 21) with a
second league matchup against No. 9/9 Harvard at 4 p.m. in
Cambridge, Mass.
