NEW HAVEN, Conn. - St. Lawrence broke open a 2-1 game with three
goals in the third period, going on to beat Yale 7-1 in
women’s ice hockey action at Ingalls Rink Saturday afternoon.
The Saints scored four power play goals in six chances. Senior
forward Aleca Hughes scored for the Bulldogs, while senior goalie
Genny Ladiges made 45 saves -- her second straight 40+ save effort
and fourth of the season.
On a day where the Saints would finish with a 52-17 advantage in
shots, Yale did not get its first shot on goal until freshman
forward Lynn Kennedy put one on net eight minutes into the game. By
then St. Lawrence already had eight shots, and while Ladiges was
able to stem the tide she could only hold the Saints off for so
long. Shot number 11, from forward Karell Emard in the slot, eluded
her at the nine-minute mark to put SLU up 1-0.
After giving up three power play goals to Clarkson Friday night,
the Bulldogs killed off their first penalty of the game Saturday
but allowed a goal at even strength shortly after. Ladiges was able
to make the save on one shot by forward Vanessa Emond, but when
Emond eventually got the puck back she was able to wrist one in
from between the circles at 13:23.
Yale battled back with a power play goal three minutes later. After
junior forward Danielle Moncion won a faceoff in the SLU zone, she
and Hughes worked to get the puck to senior defenseman Heather
Grant for a slap shot from the blue line. After Grant’s shot
was stopped, Hughes chased down the puck in the left circle, skated
back up top and then wristed one in at 16:43 to bring Yale within
2-1.
A penalty on the Bulldogs with 30 seconds left in the period led to
an interesting finish. Kennedy had a short-handed breakaway chance
denied by St. Lawrence goalie Carmen MacDonald, and Saints forward
Rylee Smith then had a breakaway chance as well. With the clock
running out, Smith pulled up for a slap shot that Ladiges turned
aside to keep the Saints lead at one.
The tide turned decidedly in St. Lawrence’s favor early in
the second thanks to special teams, as the penalty on the Bulldogs
near the end of the first was still in effect. Forward Ellie
Williams found Emond wide open in front of the crease for a power
play tally at 1:06. Four minutes later, a delayed penalty on Yale
enabled the Saints to pull MacDonald for an extra attacker. Smith
batted in a puck that had been deflected high in front, making it
4-1 at 5:11.
St. Lawrence added two more power play goals in the second, from
forward Kelly Sabatine and defenseman Amanda Boulier, and another
2:12 into the third from defenseman Brooke Fernandez, to make the
final 7-1.
Caitlyn Lahonen came in for MacDonald to play the third period,
finishing with five saves. MacDonald made 11.
Yale travels to RPI and Union next weekend.
