Despite Goals From Devin & Panchuk, Union Falls to Dartmouth
HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's hockey team scored
two goals in the second period and overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat
Union, 3-2, on Saturday at Thompson Arena. The win moved the Big
Green to 11-5-2 overall and 7-3-2 in ECAC Hockey. The loss dropped
the Dutchwomen to 3-18-3 and 1-10-1 in the conference.
The two teams headed into the first intermission with Union holding
a 2-1 advantage. After senior Reagan Fischer appeared to tie the
game four minutes into the second (it was waived off after a replay
review), the captain tied the contest with 11:48 left in the
stanza.
Fischer took the puck away from Dutchwomen defenseman Dania
Simmonds behind the Union net and passed to senior Kelly Foley in
front of the net. Union's Rhianna Kurio blocked the pass, but the
puck ricocheted back toward the goal and through the legs of
goaltender Kate Gallagher.
The score remained tied until Dartmouth went on its second power
play of the game. Foley controlled the puck on the far face-off
circle in the Union zone and passed it in front of the net to
senior Erica Dobos. Dobos used a quick touch pass to a cutting
Sasha Nanji and the junior flipped it high and to the left to give
the Big Green the lead.
Nanji's goal ended up being the game-winner with neither team
finding the net in the final frame. In the first period, each team
took over 10 shots on goal, but in the second and the third the
Dartmouth defense shut down the Dutchwomen. Union took only two
shots in second and two shots in the third and finished the game
with 15 shots. The Big Green tallied 36 shots in the contest. The
Dartmouth defense blocked six shots, but also intercepted numerous
Union passes in the second and third periods.
Dartmouth did not commit a penalty in the game with Union called
for two. The Big Green went 1-for-2 on the power play. Freshman
Katie Milligan earned her third victory of the season, making 13
saves. Gallagher made 33 saves in the loss.
The Big Green put the first tally on the board three minutes into
the game. Freshman Karlee Odland took a shot right in front of the
crease, but Gallagher knocked the puck away. Junior Camille Dumais
made a diving attempt at the rebound and flicked it in for the
score. It marked Dumais' ninth goal of the season, and she has
scored in each of the last three games.
Union scored its first goal two minutes later when Molly Kate Devin
received a pass from Lauren Cromartie in front of the crease and
scored just inside the near post. With five minutes left in the
first stanza, the Dutchwomen took a 2-1 lead. Alex
Tancrell-Fontaine brought the puck up the ice in front of the
benches and made a crossing pass to Bryanne Panchuck, who was
skating up the center of the ice. Panchuk fired the puck low and it
found a hole on the right side.
The Dutchwomen return to Messa Rink on Friday, January 20th, to
take on Brown at 7 p.m.
