Dominating First Period Gives Knights Win at Brown
Providence, RI - Before fans had a chance to get comfortable,
the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team had scored four times
and forced a goaltender change as the Golden Knights cruised to a
weekend sweep in a 6-2 ECAC Hockey victory over Brown University on
Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights won their fifth straight league contest to
improve to 8-3-1 in ECAC Hockey games, good enough for third place
in the league standings, and moved to 14-6-4 overall. Brown fell to
5-7-6 overall and 2-6-3 in the ECAC Hockey standings. Clarkson will
play back-to-back games this weekend against St. Lawrence, heading
to Canton on Friday and hosting the Saints on Saturday.
Sophomore Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) took little time to extend her
point scoring streak, lengthening the run to seven straight games
with her 11th goal of the year at the 3:04 mark of the first
period, with an assist going to freshman Daniella Matteucci
(Fruitvale, BC). Just a minute later, Matteucci's classmate Taylor
Gedig (Kelowna, BC) recorded her first collegiate goal to give
Clarkson a 2-0 lead. At the 8:58 mark the early barrage continued
with Mercer scoring her second goal of the game, this time on the
power play, with assists coming from Danielle Skirrow (Trenton,
ONT) and Amanda Lucky (Kanata, ONT). Thirty-eight seconds later,
sophomore Vanessa Gagnon (St. Constant, QUE) forced the Bears to
make a change in net as Katie Jamieson was the scapegoat for Brown,
being lifted after facing 13 shots in less than 10 minutes.
The Bears finally responded to the Clarkson offensive run with a
goal of their own in the opening moments of the second period, but
Clarkson came right back with an unassisted marker from Skirrow at
the 12:02 mark. Brown added another goal in the waning moments of
the middle frame, looking to take the momentum into the final
period. However, the Bears' hope for a change would not come as
Gagnon picked up her second goal of the game at the 4:59 mark of
the third period with assists going to Skirrow and Christine
Lambert (Thetford Mines, QUE), each their second of the
contest.
Five different players scored at least two points in the game with
Skirrow recording three points on a goal and two assists, Gagnon
and Mercer scoring twice, and Lambert and Katelyn Ptolemy
(Dinsmore, SASK) each picking up two assists. Sophomore goaltender
Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) made 25 saves in the game for Clarkson,
while Jamieson made nine saves in the early going for Brown before
being replaced by Aubree Moore, who made 17 saves in the final 50
minutes. Clarkson out shot Brown 32-27, including 18-7 in the first
period, and went 1-for-3 on the power play while holding the Bears
scoreless on their three extra-skater chances.
