NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Forward Carly Mercer had a pair of
goals as Clarkson skated to a 5-2 win over the Yale women’s
ice hockey team Friday night at Ingalls Rink. Mercer had one of the
Golden Knights’ three power play goals as the visitors went
3-for-5 on the man advantage. Freshman forward Lynn Kennedy and
junior forward Danielle Moncion scored for Yale. Senior goalie
Genny Ladiges made 40 saves, the third time this season she has
made 40 or more saves in a game.
Clarkson went ahead at 5:43 of the first as defenseman Hailey Wood
found a wide-open Mercer skating in the right circle and Mercer
one-timed it past Ladiges. Yale answered immediately, though. After
the Bulldogs won a faceoff in their own end, Kennedy chased the
puck down in the Clarkson zone. She backhanded one on net from low
in the left circle that Erica Howe made a kick save on, but the
puck popped out into the crease. Senior forward Aleca Hughes got a
piece of it before Moncion swooped in to bury it over Howe’s
left shoulder at 6:34.
The Bulldogs killed off their third penalty early in the second,
but Clarkson continued to attack and began building a sizable
advantage in shots on goal (15-5 in the period). Ladiges played a
big role in keeping the game within reach during that stretch.
Right after Juana Baribeau had a shot blocked in front by sophomore
forward Patricia McGauley, forward Shelby Nisbet grabbed the loose
puck and put it on net only to be denied by Ladiges. Nesbit then
tried another shot 90 seconds later that the Yale netminder was
able to deflect away using her blocker.
Yale did not get a shot on goal for more than nine minutes at the
start of the second, and after the Bulldogs did put one on Howe
Clarkson took it right back down to the other end of the ice and
scored. Mercer fed forward Juana Baribeau on a 2-on-1 to make it
2-1 Golden Knights at 9:31 of the second.
Just two minutes after the Clarkson goal Ladiges got right back in
her groove, making a spectacular glove save on Nisbet. But a
penalty on the Bulldogs with five minutes left in the second
enabled the Golden Knights to extend the lead to 3-1 on a power
play goal by forward Danielle Skirrow.
The Bulldogs caught a tough break when a shot hit the crossbar
right before the second period ended, keeping Clarkson’s lead
at 3-1. Mercer then scored 95 seconds into the third to make it
4-1.
Yale crept closer with 4:44 to play when Kennedy batted in a shot
from freshman defenseman Madi Murray, giving Murray her first
career point. Hughes picked up an assist on the play. Right after
that Ladiges made another great grab with her glove, this time on
forward Jamie Lee Rattray.
The Bulldogs got a power play with 3:27 to play, but senior
defenseman Heather Grant sent a slap shot wide and a save by Howe
denied Kennedy. After a Yale timeout with 2:31 to play, the
Bulldogs pulled Ladiges for an extra attacker, but a penalty on
Yale with 1:50 to play ended those plans. Ladiges stopped a shot by
Rattray with 30 seconds left to reach the 40-save mark, but Rattray
scored with 2.9 seconds left on the power play for the 5-2 final.
Howe finished with 26 saves.
Yale hosts St. Lawrence Saturday at 4 p.m.
