Balanced Tigers Attack Too Much for Raiders
HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/13/12) - Five different players scored as the
Princeton
women's hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to five, with a
5-3 win
over Colgate on Friday, Jan. 13 at Starr Rink.
The Tigers scored twice within 36 seconds less then six minutes
into the
game to take a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Denna Laing put away a Sally Butler rebound at 5:04 with
junior
Alex Kinney getting an assist. Junior Corey Stearns would score in
similar
fashion 36 seconds later with her first goal of the season. Stearns
she
knocked in an Ali Pankowski shot with senior Paula Romanchuk
getting credit
for the feed to Pankowski.
The Raiders quickly called a timeout to regroup.
After a scoreless second period, Colgate would even the game with
two goals
to start the third period.
This time it would be Princeton calling a timeout that would be the
turning
point of the game. The Tigers didn't need a deja vu of what
happened at
Baker Rink earlier this season, when Princeton had a 3-0 lead that
was
erased by Colgate as the Raiders went on to win 6-4.
The Tigers regained the lead four minutes after taking the timeout,
and
scored three goals within 1:56 to take a 5-2 edge.
Sophomore Rose Alleva scored her first career goal as she
capitalized on
Princeton's third power-play opportunity at 15:50 with help from
Butler and
senior Charissa Stadnyk. Butler earned her third point of the
evening with
the game-winning goal at 16:24 with senior Heather Landry, and
Kinney had an
unassisted empty-net goal at 17:46.
Rachel Walsh would score a 6x4 goal in the final minute for Colgate
put it
was too little to late.
Senior Rachel Weber made 24 saves in her eighth win of the season,
as the
Tigers improve to 8-9-4 overall and remain in third place in the
league with
a 7-6-2 mark.
Kimberly Sass stopped 27 for the Raiders who drop to 8-13-1 overall
and
3-7-1 in the ECAC.
The Tigers were 1 for 3 on the power play and 3 for 4 on the
penalty kill,
as they outshot Colgate 32-27.
Princeton will face No. 3 Cornell tomorrow, Jan. 14 at 4 p.m. The
Big Red
topped Quinnipiac 4-1 this evening.
