Baumgartner Goal Seals Win Over Union For No. 10 Harvard
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After recovering from a nagging injury,
senior captain Alisa Baumgartner scored the insurance goal in her
first game this season, as the 10th-ranked Harvard women’s
ice hockey team topped Union, 2-0, Friday night at Bright Hockey
Center. With the senior’s tally, every Harvard position
player has registered at least a point this season.
The shots were plentiful for the Crimson (10-5-1, 7-3-1 ECAC)
through the first two periods, but Union (3-17-2, 1-9-1 ECAC)
goalie Kate Gallagher brought her ‘A’ game and kept
Harvard off the board for the majority of the first and second
stanzas. After outshooting the Dutchwomen 12-6 in the first,
Harvard upped the pressure and found a goal in the second, despite
a pair of Union penalty kills.
Samantha Reber won a puck off the left-side boards to Hillary Crowe
and Crowe’s ensuing shot was redirected by Elizabeth Parker
past Gallagher for a 1-0 lead with 3:06 to play in the frame.
Harvard entered the third period with a 30-11 shots advantage.
The third period saw Harvard commit its first penalty, but the kill
unit was up to the task, squashing the Union opportunity and
maintaining a one-goal lead. With 12:53 gone in the third, Harvard
found its second goal of the night, started by a heads-up play at
mid-ice by Jillian Dempsey. Dempsey shoveled the puck back to
Marissa Gedman at the blue line and Gedman winged a pass to
Baumgartner at the opposing blue line. The senior collected cleanly
and fired a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle that beat
Gallagher through the five-hole.
Harvard goalie Laura Bellamy needed just 15 saves to record her
second shutout of the season and second against a conference
opponent.
Harvard is back in action tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m., when it
takes on Rensselaer in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Bright Hockey
Center. The men’s team faces No. 6 Boston University
following tomorrow’s contest.
