Dumais Sends Dartmouth Home a Winner at Frozen Fenway

BOSTON, MASS. — The Dartmouth women's hockey team, playing in the center of the baseball diamond at Fenway Park, came away with a 3-2 victory over Providence on Tuesday after junior Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Quebec) scored the game-winning goal with 1:14 left in the third. The win moved the Big Green to 9-5-2 overall, and the Friars dropped to 9-12-3.

With time winding down in the third period, the Friars' Jessica Cohen committed a tripping penalty with 3:08 left on the clock. It looked like Providence was going to be able to kill the penalty, but Dartmouth had other ideas. Junior Margaux Sharp (Carleton Place, Ontario) passed the puck off the boards on the right side in the Providence zone and senior Kelly Foley (South Boston, Mass.) collected the puck.

The forward passed the puck past the defense to Dumais who took a quick shot at Friars' goaltender Genevieve Lacasse. Lacasse blocked the initial shot, but Dumais was right there for the rebound and flicked the puck off the skate of Lacasse and into the net to give the Big Green a 3-2 lead with 1:14 left to play. Providence pulled its goaltender with time ticking away, but couldn't find the equalizer with the extra skater.

The third period started with the two teams tied at one. Freshman Karlee Odland (Vauxhall, Alberta) won't forget this game anytime soon as she broke the tie 8:47 into the third. Junior Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ontario) made a pass up the right side of the ice to Dumais. The forward forced Lacasse to slide to the near side, and Dumais slid the puck across the crease to a cutting Odland who slammed home her first collegiate goal.

Providence responded with 4:13 left in the game on a power play off a deflected shot that slid past sophomore Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, Pa.). From there, the Friars thought they might have a shot at a win or a tie in overtime, but the Big Green closed out the contest in style off the stick of Dumais.

With the backdrop of the Green Monster in left field, the weather was kind to both teams. It was partly cloudy at the time of the opening faceoff with the temperature in the mid 40's. It cooled down after the sun went down, but the hot play of the Big Green continued throughout the entire game.

Providence opened the scoring in the first period 11:09 into the contest. After receiving the puck, senior Jennifer Friedman slapped a shot from in front of the Dartmouth bench, which would normally be second base. Freshman Brooke Simpson deflected the shot in front of the net and the change of direction beat Holdcroft.

The Big Green outshot the Friars in the opening stanza, 11-5, but could not take advantage of the three power plays it had. Dartmouth committed only one penalty near the end of the period, but was able to kill the penalty.

Dartmouth evened the contest in the second on its first power-play goal in its last 15 chances. Senior Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alberta) had the puck in front of the crease and passed to Dumais. Dumais fired a shot that was blocked by Lacasse. The puck slid over to the left side of the crease and Nanji was waiting for it and stuffed home her fifth goal of the season.

The Friars were more aggressive in the second taking 12 shots to just five for the Big Green. Dartmouth converted on its only power-play opportunity of the stanza, while Providence finished 0-for-3 with the extra skater.

Dartmouth finished the game with 31 shots with the Friars only taking 20. The Big Green finished 2-for-6 on the power play with the Friars going 1-for-5. Holdcroft finished the contest with 18 saves and Lacasse made 28.

The Big Green have a quick turn around as it hosts Rensselaer on Friday at 7 p.m. and Union on Saturday at 4 p.m. The games begin the final stretch for Dartmouth with the last 12 games against conference opponents.
