Brown Skates to Overtime Tie at UConn
Storrs, Conn. – Brown extended its unbeaten streak to
three games on Saturday at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum,
skating to a 1-1 overtime tie with UConn. Brown trailed in the game
for all but 12:13, as the Huskies scored just two minutes into the
contest. The Bears were able to find the equalizer late however, as
senior Jacquie Pierri (Montclair, N.J.) came up with the clutch
score.
Bruno (5-5-6, 2-4-3 ECAC Hockey) outshot the Huskies 38-26 in the
game, but a tough UConn (3-13-5, 2-5-2 Hockey East) defense made it
a close highly-contested affair.
Sophomore netminder Aubree Moore (Bowie, Md.) was able to overcome
the early goal and was stellar from then on out, making 25 saves on
the day.
Pierri's first goal of the season could not have come at a better
time as her game-tying goal brought the Bears a well-deserved point
in the standings.
The Bears got behind early, as freshman Kayla Campero scored on the
Huskies first shot of the game, just 2:06 into the contest.
Brown got an opportunity at 9:22 in the first when a tripping
penalty on the Huskies put Bruno on the power play. The Bears
could not convert however, as UConn's penalty kill unit stood
up.
An interference call on Brown at 12:40 set up Connecticut, but the
advantage would only last 43 seconds as a high-sticking call made
it four-on-four hockey. Despite open ice and then a power play, the
Bears shots could not find the back of the net.
Even though Brown held a 13-10 shot advantage and four power plays
in the first period the Bears could not score as the Husky penalty
kill unit, which came in with a 87.2 percentage, held up on each
occasion.
The UConn penalties kept coming early in the second period as a
hooking call at 1:48 put the Brown back on the power play, but
again the Husky PK unit passed the test, keeping the Bears off the
board.
Brown dominated much of the second, out-shooting the Huskies 10-0
through the first 13 and a half minutes and 15-2 overall in the
frame, but could still not find a way to get one past Paniccia.
UConn came out attacking offensively in the third period, and got
an early power play on a tripping call at 2:43, but the Bears were
able to work off the infraction, getting back to full strength to
try and find the equalizer.
At 10:07 in the third the Bears found it. With a pile-up in the in
front on the net, Brown squeezed off thee-consecutive shots, with
the final rebound coming back to Pierri who batted the puck in
mid-air with her stick past Paniccia for the 1-1 tie. Junior Alena
Polenska (Kutna Hora, Czech Republic) sophomore Vanessa Welten
(Crysler, Ontario) and freshman Brittany Moorehead (Clinton, N.Y.)
were there for the assists.
Neither team could find the go-ahead goal at the end of regulation
and despite Brown out-shooting UConn 4-1 in the overtime period,
the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Bears will be back in action next weekend in their return to
Meehan Auditorium, their first home game since December 3. Brown
will play two pivotal ECAC Hockey matchups, taking on St. Lawrence
at 7 p.m., on Friday, January 13, before facing Clarkson on
Satruday, January 14 at 4 p.m.
