Clarkson Falls at No. 7 Northeastern
Unfortunately for the Golden Knights of the Clarkson University
Women’s Hockey team they could not carry the momentum from a
strong finish to 2011 over the extended break as they opened the
New Year with a 5-2 non-league loss to seventh-ranked Northeastern
University at Matthews Arena in Boston on Thursday afternoon.
Clarkson, which closed out the 2011 portion of the schedule with a
five-game winning streak, goes to 12-5-4 on the season. Coming off
its first loss since November 18, the Knights will look to get back
on track when they play at fourth-ranked Boston College on Friday
in a 3:00 p.m. faceoff.
Playing for the first time in 24-days and without leading scorer,
sophomore Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ONT) who is with
Canada’s U-22 National Team at the Meco Cup in Germany,
Clarkson suffered its worst loss of the season to the Huskies.
Northeastern (14-4-1), which stands atop Hockey East, ran its
current unbeaten to five games (4-0-1) with a dominating effort
against the Green and Gold. The Huskies took a 1-0 first-period
lead on a shorthanded tally by Kendall Coyne midway through the
opening stanza, and then built their lead to 4-0 late second period
with a three-goal spurt.
Brittany Esposito connected on the power play at 7:17, followed by
goals from Claire Santostefano, at 12:59, and Rachel Llanes, at
14:38.
Clarkson finally got on the scoreboard when sophomore Carly Mercer
(Exeter, ONT) finished off a nice pass from senior Juana Baribeau
(Amos, QUE) for her eighth goal of the season at 15;06 of the
middle frame. Sophomore Amanda Lucky (Kanata, ONT) also assisted to
gain her first point of the season.
Northeastern came right back, however, 51 seconds later with
Coyne’s second goal of the game to put the home team on top
5-2 through 40 minutes.
With just 1:36 remaining in regulation, Baribeau tallied her eighth
goal of the season and 54th career score to give the Knights’
their second goal of the game. Mercer and freshman defenseman
Daniella Matteucci (Fruitvale, BC) assisted.
Northeastern outshot Clarkson 27-24. The Huskies were 1-of-3 on the
power play and killed off the Knights’ lone man-advantage
opportunity.
Sophomore Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) made 17 saves on 21 shots
through 35 minutes, while freshman Emily Horn (Hamilton, ONT)
turned aside five of six Northeastern shots over the final 25
minutes.
Chloe Desjardins posted 22 stops for Northeastern.
