Saints Celebrate “Senior Day” with Win Over Brown
Feb. 4: The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team
delivered a solid performance in its final regular season game at
Appleton Arena on Saturday, defeating Brown University 3-1 on
"Senior Day." Senior Vanessa Emond scored the game-winning
goal, while classmate Alley Bero added an assist in the third
period.
St. Lawrence, now 17-8-4 on the season and 11-5-2 in ECAC Hockey
play, has four away games remaining in the regular season.
Meanwhile, Brown (7-11-7, 4-10-4) continues to fight for the final
playoff spot with two weeks left to go.
"I thought we had great jump tonight. Brown is always
difficult to play and tonight wasn't any different," said St.
Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "We were able to get some
key goals at the beginning of each period to get the win."
The Saints scored one goal in the opening 3:00 minutes of each
period, including the first goal of the game by junior Kelly
Sabatine a mere 59 seconds into regulation. The Hamilton, ON
native re-directed a shot from outside the left circle from
classmate Brooke Fernandez behind Brown goalie Aubrey Moore for her
16th goal of the year. Both Fernandez and rookie Amanda
Boulier assisted on the only goal of the first period.
St. Lawrence, which held a 9-5 advantage in shots after one, struck
again at 1:27 of the second period on a great individual effort by
Emond. The Levis, QC native collected her own rebound on a
shot wide of the net and crashed the net, tucking the puck across
the line for her ninth goal of the season, unassisted, for a 2-0
advantage.
Though the Saints had the better of the play again in the second,
Moore made several great stops to keep the visitors in the game
headed to the final stanza.
However, sophomore Rylee Smith's power play goal at 2:59 of the
period would seemingly put the game away for the Scarlet and
Brown. The Hagersville, ON native sniped a shot past Moore
for her team-leading 17th goal of the year from the right circle,
with Bero picking up the only assist.
Brown would get on the scoreboard midway through the third period
with a power play goal, as the Bears' Sarah Robson collected a
rebound off a shot by Alena Polenska and fired a shot past St.
Lawrence first-year goalie Carmen MacDonald to cut the deficit to
3-1. Jennifer Nedow also earned a helper on the goal.
Unfortunately for the Bears, two minor penalties in the last 6:00
minutes of the game would end their chances of a comeback, as the
Saints held on for the 3-1 victory.
The home team finished with a 37-16 advantage in shots on goal and
a 1-for-4 mark on the power play. The Bears were 1-of-3 with
the extra skater. Moore closed with 34 stops, while MacDonald
countered with 15 saves.
Prior to the game, senior assistant captain Josee Belanger was
honored as St. Lawrence University's finalist for ECAC Hockey's
2011-12 Mandi Schwartz Student-Athlete of the Year award.
Following the game, Belanger, Emond, Bero and captain Karell Emard
were honored with a ceremony with their families and teammates.
St. Lawrence will hit the road next weekend, February 10 and 11, in
two crucial games in the conference standings. The Saints
take on Quinnipiac at 7:00pm on Friday, followed by a match-up with
Princeton at 4:00pm on Saturday.
