Knights Roll By Yale Behind Third-Period Outburst
With its most explosive period of the season the Clarkson
University Women’s Hockey team broke open a tight game
against Yale with a six-goal outburst over the final 20 minutes to
defeat the Bulldogs 7-0 on Saturday afternoon in its final
regular-season game at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights, who have won four in a row and are 6-1-1 in
ECAC Hockey play during the New Year, improved their record to
18-7-5 overall and to 11-5-2 in the conference. Clarkson, which
defeated Brown 4-3 in overtime on Friday, closed out the
regular-season in Potsdam with an 11-1-4 home mark. The Knights
vying for a home-ice berth in the upcoming playoffs, hold down
third place in the ECAC Hockey standings, one point shy of second,
and will play their final four regular-season contests on the road
beginning with next Friday’s game at Princeton.
The Green and Gold dominated Yale (1-24-1, 1-17-0) on the shot
chart with a 39-16 advantage, but needed the third-period outburst
to clinch the victory. Sophomore Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) posted 16
saves to record her sixth shutout of the season, which ties her for
the most in the nation.
After a scoreless second period, Clarkson broke the game open with
four goals in the opening 10 minutes of the final stanza. Junior
Danielle Skirrow (Trenton, ONT) set up Clarkson’s second goal
when she kept the puck in the Bulldogs’ zone and fed
sophomore Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ONT) on a 2-on-1. Rattray
finished off the play with her team-high 16th goal of the season at
5:23 to put the Knights on top 2-0.
Just under two minutes later, senior Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE)
picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, skated to the top of
the circles and fired in her 15th goal of the year at 7:17.
At 9:31, sophomore Shelby Nisbet (Wiseton, SASK) scored during a
scrum in front for her fifth goal of the season. Freshman Christine
Lambert (Thetford, Mines, QUE) assisted on Clarkson’s fourth
goal.
The Knights continued to roll adding three more scores to close out
a six-goal binge in the period. At 10:33, sophomore Carly Mercer
(Exeter, ONT) fired in a blast from the left circle for her 14th
tally of the season. Sophomore Brittany Styner (Calgary, ALB) and
Baribeau assisted. Skirrow followed with her second goal of the
game and 16th of the season, a power-play marker at 13:16. Junior
Hailey Wood (Lethbridge, ALB) and Rattray picked up assists. With
2:22 remaining in the game, Styner netted her fourth goal of the
year, finishing off assists from Mercer and sophomore Amanda Lucky
(Kanata, ONT).
Skirrow gave Clarkson a 1-0 lead late in the first period. Senior
Gabrielle Kosziwka (Limehouse, ONT) forced a Yale turnover in
its own end and fed a short pass to Skirrow, who sent a shot
under the crossbar at 15:22.
Clarkson was 1-of-2 on the power play and killed off the Bulldogs'
only man-advantage.
