Slow Starts in Each Period Dooms Bears
Canton, N.Y. – The Brown women's hockey team concluded a
long road trip to upstate New York on Saturday afternoon, taking on
St. Lawrence at Appelton Arena. Despite 34 saves from sophomore
netminder Aubree Moore (Bowie, Md.) the Bears were topped 3-1.
Despite the loss, Brown (7-11-7, 4-10-4) remain in a tie with RPI
for the final ECAC Hockey playoff spot, with just four games
remaining on the regular-season schedule.
The Saints (17-8-4, 11-5-2) scored one goal in the opening 3:00
minutes of each period, including the first goal of the game by
junior Kelly Sabatine, just 59 seconds into regulation, as she
re-directed a shot from outside the left circle from classmate
Brooke Fernandez behind Moore for her 16th goal of the year.
St. Lawrence, which held a 9-5 advantage in shots after one, struck
again at 1:27 of the second period on a great individual effort by
senior Vanessa Emond who collected her own rebound on a shot wide
of the net and crashed the net, tucking the puck across the line
for her ninth goal of the season, unassisted, for a 2-0
advantage.
Though the Saints had the better of the play again in the second,
Moore made several great stops to keep the Bears in the game headed
to the final stanza.
However, sophomore Rylee Smith's power play goal at 2:59 of the
period made it a 3-0 game. Smith sniped a shot past Moore for her
team-leading 17th goal of the year from the right circle,.
Brown would get on the scoreboard midway through the third period
with a power play goal, as the rookie Sarah Robson (Mississauga,
Ontario) tallied her team-leading eight goal of the season,
collecting a rebound off a shot by junior Alena Polenska (Kutna
Hora, Czech Republic) and fired a shot past St. Lawrence first-year
goalie Carmen MacDonald to cut the deficit to 3-1. Sophomore
defender Jennifer Nedow (Brockville, Ontario) also earned a helper
on the goal.
Unfortunately for the Bears, two minor penalties in the last 6:00
minutes of the game would end their chances of a comeback, as the
Saints held on for the 3-1 victory.
The home team finished with a 37-16 advantage in shots on goal and
a 1-for-4 mark on the power play. The Bears were 1-of-3 with the
extra skater.
Brown will be back in action next weekend with their final two home
games of the season. The Bears will face off against
nationally-ranked Cornell and a pivotal game in the race for the
final playoff spot, against Colgate.
