Bulldogs Drop League Contest to Brown
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Forward Janice Yang scored a pair of
goals and forward Katelyn Landry had a pair of assists as Brown
skated to a 4-1 win over the Yale women’s ice hockey team
Wednesday night at Ingalls Rink. With the win, the Bears snapped a
winless streak of eight straight (seven losses, one tie) against
the Bulldogs. Sophomore forward Ashley Dunbar scored for Yale.
Yale had the first goal of the game wiped away after a video
review, as it was ruled that the puck was kicked in. Still, the
Bulldogs controlled play for much of the early going. Brown did not
get its first shot on net until a long-distance effort that bounced
to freshman goalie Jaimie Leonoff. Brown goalie Katie Jamieson was
kept busy but was up to the challenge, denying freshman forward
Lynn Kennedy’s attempt to stuff in a puck at the near post at
8:30 after Kennedy hustled to get a loose puck in the Brown
zone.
Ninety seconds after that attempt by Kennedy, sophomore forward
Jackie Raines freed herself up for a snap shot from the right
circle by threading the puck through a Brown defender’s legs,
but the shot went wide. Right after that, Dunbar took advantage of
a Bears line change and skated in all alone on Jamieson, sending
the puck just high.
Brown broke on top by catching Yale in transition, as Yang grabbed
a pass from the neutral zone and skated through the Bulldog defense
to put one past Leonoff at 11:36.
Leonoff stopped a point-blank attempt by forward Laurie Jolin with
four minutes left in the first, but a slap shot by defenseman
Lauren Vella through traffic gave Brown a 2-0 lead 35 seconds
before the first intermission. Yang extended that lead to 3-0 at
2:01 of the second, taking advantage of the game’s first
penalty to score a power play goal. That also led to senior Genny
Ladiges coming on in relief of Leonoff.
The Bulldogs got on the board at 6:43 of the second when Dunbar
knocked in a shot by sophomore forward Paige Decker that was set up
by junior defenseman Jamie Gray.
Yale had a chance to get back in the game with a power play in the
final five minutes of the second. But Jamieson stopped a backhander
by junior forward Danielle Moncion as the penalty expired, and a
diving shot by Kennedy then went wide with the teams back at full
strength.
After killing off a penalty from late in the second period,
including a great save by Ladiges on a one-timer by forward Sarah
Robson, the Bulldogs got another power play midway through the
third but were unable to convert. Right after that, Bears forward
Emilie Dolan scored to make it 4-1 with just 8:43 to play, all but
ending the Bulldogs’ hopes of a comeback.
Jamieson finished with 25 saves. The Bulldogs held a 30-17 edge on
faceoffs -- including 14 wins in 19 tries by Moncion -- but were
outshot 30-26. Ladiges made 18 saves while Leonoff made eight.
Yale hosts McGill in an exhibition on Saturday at 2 p.m.
