CANTON, N.Y. - The Yale women’s ice hockey team ended its goal-scoring drought, and twice made comebacks to tie the game Friday night at Appleton Arena, but ultimately St. Lawrence’s firepower was too much. Forward Kelly Sabatine had a hat trick to lead the Saints to a 6-2 win over the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs had been shut out in back-to-back games last weekend, and when St. Lawrence took an early lead it looked like it could be another long night. Forward Rylee Smith found Sabatine all alone in front of the net, giving Sabatine enough time to make a move to get senior goaltender Genny Ladiges out of position and stuff in a goal at 4:57.

But Yale settled down after that and had a few good scoring chances, including a 2-on-1 where a pass from freshman forward Lynn Kennedy was just a bit too far for junior forward Danielle Moncion, glancing off her stick wide. Saints goalie Carmen MacDonald kicked away a slap shot from junior defenseman Emily DesMeules 90 seconds later.

Yale was unable to take advantage of a pair of St. Lawrence penalties later in the first, but the Bulldogs tied things up at even strength early in the second. Senior forward Aleca Hughes put the puck on net, and Kennedy was able to jam in the loose puck at 3:39.

Right after that MacDonald made a nice save on a tricky wrister by sophomore forward Jackie Raines, and the Saints defense was able to clear away the rebound. Ladiges then answered by denying defenseman Brooke Fernandez from low in the left circle after Fernandez skated through the Yale defense. But Ladiges was unable to get to a shot by Smith at the 11:29 mark off a pretty feed from Sabatine.

Down 2-1, the Bulldogs battled back again. St. Lawrence took a penalty in the Yale zone at 14:11 and it was not long before the Blue power play capitalized. Raines set up junior forward Alyssa Zupon for a shot on net, and as MacDonald was trying to cover it at the left post Moncion swooped in and grabbed it. The Yale center came around the other side of the net to deposit the game-tying goal at the 14:52 mark.

Ladiges gloved a slap shot by defenseman Amanda Boulier with four and a half minutes left in the second, and that started off a stretch where the Bulldogs had a chance to seize control of the game. Two penalties on the Saints gave Yale a 5-on-3 for 93 seconds. But Zupon just missed jamming in a feed from senior defenseman Heather Grant, and Hughes sent a shot high. Grant then shot wide, the Saints cleared, and the Bulldogs could not mount another threat.

That came back to haunt Yale just a few seconds after the power play ended, as Sabatine put in the rebound of a shot that Ladiges made a kick save on. Two goals early in the third, by forwards Bailey Habscheid and Vanessa Emond, then put the game out of reach. Sabatine added a power play goal with 4:24 to play, capitalizing on one of just two penalties the Bulldogs incurred all night. That tied for the second-lowest penalty total for the season for Yale.
