Sabatine’s Hat Track Paces Saints Past Yale

Feb. 3: St. Lawrence University junior forward Kelly Sabatine scored a hat trick and an assist, while sophomore defenseman Dayle Wilkinson added a career-high three assists as the Saints skated past Yale University 6-2 at Appleton Arena on Friday night.

The Saints improve to 16-8-4 (10-5-2) after keeping consistent pressure on the Bulldogs (1-23-0, 1-16-0), outshooting the visitors by a sound 41-16 margin.

"Yale played us tough tonight, but we were able to find our way in the third to separate ourselves from them," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells.  "We will be ready for Brown tomorrow."

St. Lawrence would take a 1-0 lead at 4:57 of the first period when Sabatine used a slick backhanded move to beat Bulldog goaltender Genny Ladiges for her 13th goal of the year.  However, Ladiges would keep the Saints quiet for the remainder of the period, helping the visitors stay within striking distance after 20:00 minutes.

Yale would tie the game at 3:39 of the second period when Lynn Kennedy took a pass from Aleca Hughes and scored on St. Lawrence rookie goaltender Carmen MacDonald.  Though Rylee Smith and Danielle Moncion would exchange goals at 11:29 and 14:52, respectively, the Scarlet and Brown would take the lead for good with 43.5 seconds left in the stanza.  Sabatine pounced on a rebound off a shot from sophomore Mel Desrochers and scored her second of the game to put the home team on top, 3-2.

Sabatine's second goal would shift all of the momentum to the Saints, as they outshot Yale 14-4 in the third and outscored them, 3-0.  Sophomore Bailey Habscheid and senior Vanessa Emond would both re-direct shots from the blue line past Ladiges, while Sabatine capped off the hat trick at 15:36 for her 15th goal of the year.

Smith, first-year Amanda Boulier, senior Alley Bero (2) and junior Brooke Fernandez also earned helpers in the win over the Bulldogs.

Ladiges did all she could to keep Yale in the game with a 35-save performance, while MacDonald closed with 14 saves to backstop her team to victory.

St. Lawrence will play its final regular season home game tomorrow, Saturday, February 4, as the team celebrates "Senior Day" against Brown.  The puck is set to drop on the Saints and Bears at 4:00pm.
