Bobcats Defeated by No. 7/8 Harvard
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore forward Amanda Colin
(Burnsville, Minn.) and junior forward Breann Frykas (East St.
Paul, Manitoba) each scored second period goals, but the Quinnipiac
women's ice hockey team fell to ECAC Hockey opponent No. 7/8
Harvard, 4-2, on Friday evening at Bright Hockey Center.
Quinnipiac's record now stands at 10-5-2 in ECAC Hockey action
(15-11-2 overall), while Harvard improves to 12-4-1 in league play
and 15-7-1 overall.
The two sides remained scoreless through the first 20 minutes of
action, as Harvard held an 8-to-4 shot advantage in the frame.
While the teams are statistically two of the best in the nation in
terms of least penalty minutes-per-game (entering the contest,
Quinnipiac ranked first with an NCAA Division I-low 7.0 minutes
compared to Harvard's fourth lowest mark at 8.6 minutes), the
Crimson appeared overaggressive and were whistled for four
infractions in the stanza. Quinnipiac committed only one penalty in
the frame and did well to prevent Harvard's power-play unit from
breaking the stalemate with its opportunity late in the period.
Suffocating defense remained a priority for both teams in the
second period of action, yet Quinnipiac was able to break through
for the first goal of the game on Colin's tally at the 7:47 mark.
Colin grabbed a rebound off Quinnipiac's first shot of the stanza,
as fellow sophomore Kelly Babstock's (Mississauga, Ontario) close
range shot was saved by junior goalie Laura Bellamy. The puck
deflected towards the unmarked Colin, who one-timed it in for her
sixth goal of the year. Babstock earned her team-high 16th assist
of the year on the score.
Quinnipiac regained its sense of urgency following the goal, and
added a second score just under three minutes later on Frykas'
power-play goal at the 10:35 mark into the second period. Following
rotational passes just inside the blue line from freshman Nicole
Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) and junior Regan Boulton (Brandon,
Manitoba), Frykas received the pass and drove a hard shot towards
the skates of Bellamy. The junior goaltender seemed to have control
of the puck, but could not contain the puck as it trickled under
her pads into the back of the net.
Harvard closed the gap to 2-1 in the waning minutes of the second
period, as sophomore Lyndsey Fry netted her 12th goal of the season
at the 19:20 mark. Fry held the puck as she delayed the shot,
before eventually wristing in the score over the outstretched glove
of Laden. Freshman Samantha Reber and junior Josephine Pucci were
each credited with an assist on the goal.
The Crimson re-tied the score at two-apiece on a power-play score
by junior Jillian Dempsey just 1:11 into the third period of
action. Holding the puck at the bottom of the faceoff circle, Fry
eyed Dempsey and hit her with a cross-crease pass where the
junior's quick slap-shot sailed over the pad of Laden for her 15th
score of the year. Fry earned her 12th assist on the goal, while
Pucci earned her 13th helper of the year.
Pucci gave Harvard its first lead of the game on her power-play
goal at the 9:00 mark into the third stanza. Freshman Sarah Edney
initially swung the puck to Fry who spotted Pucci crashing the net.
The junior knocked in her fourth score of the season, while Edney
and Fry were each credited with an assist on the goal.
Harvard scored its third and final goal of the period on its next
shot at the 10:24 mark of the third frame on Dempsey's second goal
of the game. The score was another point-blank shot on net, as
Dempsey received a pass from Reber in tight, where she slipped one
through the legs of Laden.
Overall, Laden made 27 saves on the evening, while her counterpart
Bellamy turned away 11 shots.
Quinnipiac was successful on one of its five power-play
opportunities, while Harvard was 2-for-5 in the game
The Bobcats look to rebound tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 4 when they
travel to face Dartmouth at 4 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
