Princeton Knocks Off No. 10 Dartmouth
HANOVER, N.H. - Junior Corey Stearns scored the game-winning
goal in the second period to give the Princeton women's hockey team
a 2-1 win over No. 10 Dartmouth on Friday, Feb. 3 at Thompson
Arena.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead before Dartmouth got on the scoreboard
midway through the second period. All three goals came on the power
play.
Junior Kelly Cooke gave Princeton a 1-0 lead with help from
sophomore Gabie Figueroa and freshman Brianne Mahoney with 1:24
left in the first period. Mahoney had the puck in front of the
Dartmouth bench and sent a cross-ice pass to Figueroa who fired a
shot on goal. Cooke redirected the shot putting the puck past two
defenders and netminer Lindsay Holdcroft.
Stearns scored what would be the game-winning goal with help from
senior Charissa Stadnyk at 9:51 of the second period. A shot by
Stadnyk deflected off of a Big Green defender and Stearns was in
the right place to collect it and send it past Holdcroft.
Camille Dumais put the home team on the board at 12:29, scoring on
Princeton's first penalty of the game. Sasha Nanji and Moira
Scanlon got credited with the assists.
Dartmouth outshot Princeton 42-19 in the game with senior
goaltender Rachel Weber standing strong between the pipes. Weber
finished the game with 41 saves, the second most stops she has made
this season. She stopped two in the final 43 seconds as the Big
Green tried to find the equalizer skating 6x5. Her biggest stop of
the night came with 14 minutes to play in the third when she made a
sliding save on a 2x1 rush between Ali Winkel and Sally Komarek
Holdcroft stopped 17 in goal for the Big Green.
Princeton improves to 10-10-4 overall and 8-7-2 in ECAC Hockey to
move into seventh place in the league standings. Dartmouth is
11-6-2 on the season and 10-5-2 in the league.
The Tigers will face No. 8 Harvard tomorrow, Feb. 4 at 4 p.m.
Harvard defeated Quinnipiac 4-2 this evening.
