Dartmouth Drops Game to Princeton
HANOVER, N.H. — In a game with every goal coming on the
power play, the 10th-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team fell to
Princeton, 2-1, on Friday at Thompson Arena. The loss dropped the
Big Green to 14-7-2 overall, 10-5-2 in ECAC Hockey and 4-3-1 in the
Ivy League. The Tigers improved to 10-10-4 overall, 8-7-2 in the
ECAC and 6-2-1 in the Ivy League.
Princeton grabbed a 1-0 lead late in the first period. After
Dartmouth committed its second penalty of the stanza with 1:27
left, Princeton won the ensuing faceoff, and freshman Brianne
Mahoney had the puck in front of the Big Green bench.
She passed it across the blue line to sophomore Gabie Figueroa who
fired the puck at the net from between the circles. Junior Kelly
Cooke deflected the puck between two Dartmouth defenders, and it
slid past sophomore Lindsay Holdcroft (Pittsburgh, Pa.) for the
game's first tally.
The teams would head into intermission with Princeton holding a 1-0
lead. Dartmouth came out aggressive in the second and took 23 shots
on net, but senior Rachel Weber was up for the challenge and
stopped 22 of them on her way to 41 saves on the night. But before
the Big Green could score on Weber, the Tigers used another power
play to push the lead to 2-0.
Junior Sally Komarek (Minneapolis, Minn.) was whistled for a
hooking penalty 9:24 into the second to give Princeton the extra
skater. With the puck in the Dartmouth zone, senior Chrissa Stadnyk
took a shot from the blue line, but senior Reagan Fischer (Irma,
Alberta) deflected it to the left of the net. Unfortunately for
Dartmouth, the puck went right to the stick of junior Corey Stearns
who slapped a shot that sailed past a diving Holdcroft and into the
right side of the net.
Dartmouth closed the two-goal gap to one three minutes later on
junior Camille Dumais' (Beaconsfield, Quebec) 10th goal of the
season. On its first power play of the contest, Dumais took a pass
from junior Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ontario) and fired a shot from
the right faceoff circle that passed in front of Weber but just
inside the far post for the goal.
Even with numerous opportunities in the second and the third,
Dartmouth could find the equalizer. With 14 minutes left in the
third, Komarek and sophomore Ali Winkel (Espanola, Ontario) had a
two-on-one rush, but Weber made a sliding save to stop Winkel's
shot. Later in the third, Foley took on the Tiger defense,
one-on-three, and made a nifty move in front of the net, but Weber
was there to stop the shot like she was all night long. The Big
Green pulled Holdcroft with 43 seconds left in the game and got off
two shots, but Weber stopped both.
The Big Green finished with five penalties and went 1-for-4 on the
power play. Princeton committed four penalties and went 2-for-5 on
the power play. Holdcroft made 17 saves in the loss.
Dartmouth returns to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. when it hosts
Quinnipiac.
