Late Rally Pushes Harvard Past Dartmouth
HANOVER, N.H. – Down a goal midway through the third
period, the Harvard women's hockey team found its stride
offensively late in the game as the Crimson rallied for a pair of
scores to top Dartmouth, 2-1, Wednesday night at Thompson Arena.
The win puts Harvard at 6-4-0, 6-2-0 ECAC on the season, as the
Crimson responded after Dartmouth took the first end of the season
series a week ago.
After two slow periods, the action picked up in the third with the
hosts notching the first goal of the game 2:49 into the period.
Kelly Foley broke the scoreless tie with her eighth goal of the
season, converting a pass from Ali Winkel that put Harvard in a 1-0
hole.
The Crimson offense got going late, upping the pressure in the back
half of the final period, resulting in a goal at the 12:52 mark.
Sarah Edney slid a pass to Marissa Gedman, who brought the puck
into the Dartmouth zone and fired a long-distance shot on goalie
Lindsay Holdcroft. Holdcroft made the save but let up a long
rebound and Elizabeth Parker snuck in front of the net and put away
the carom for her third goal of the season.
The tie score didn't last long as the Crimson grabbed the lead for
good 1:05 later. Jillian Dempsey collected the puck deep in the
corner and fed an advancing Kelsey Romatoski near the left faceoff
circle. Romatoski flicked a shot on net that was redirected by
Lyndsey Fry past Holdcroft for the game-winning score. The Big
Green pulled its goalie and put a number of pucks on net, but Laura
Bellamy was rock solid, despite losing her stick for much of the
final flurry, helping Harvard seal the one-goal victory.
Both offenses sputtered through the first period as the teams
combined for just 11 shots in the frame. The Crimson held the Big
Green without a shot on goal for the first 11 minutes of the period
as the team's traded penalties in the first half of the frame. The
Harvard penalty kill was on point, keeping Dartmouth quiet on a
pair of power plays and goalie Laura Bellamy turned aside all seven
shots she faced in the period.
While the chances increased in the second stanza, neither team was
able to break the scoreless tie. The Crimson tested Dartmouth
goalie Lindsay Holdcroft on a pair of power plays but Holdcroft
stymied a handful of great looks right on the doorstep. Harvard
squared the overall shots at 17-apiece after outshooting the Big
Green, 13-10, in the second period.
The Crimson wraps up the 2011 portion of its schedule with a pair
of midweek contests next week. Harvard travels to Providence
Thursday for a 7 p.m., game with the Friars and returns to Bright
the following evening for a contest against New Hampshire.
