Union Drops First Game in East/West Showcase
MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Freshman Camille Corbin tallied her first
career goal Friday night in the Dutchwomen's opening game to the
2011-2012 season. After a hard fought game, Union fell 6-1 to
No. 4 Minnesota at Ridder Arena.
Minnesota sophomore Amanda Kessel notched the first goal at 3:07
in the first, assisted by senior Sarah Erickson and senior Jen
Schoullis. Erickson would tally her first goal of the season
with 9:13 left in the period, taking a 2-0 lead headed into the
first intermission.
The Dutchwomen returned from intermission with a vengeance,
scoring just two minutes into the second period. Corbin would
take advantage of the power play, with Minnesota's Erickson in the
penalty box, and cut the Gophers' lead to one. The San Diego
native was assisted by sophomore Elsa Bruestle, tallying her first
point of the season.
Unfortunately, Minnesota responded quickly, scoring just two
minutes later. Both teams went scoreless for the majority of the
final period, with the Gophers notching their final goal with just
under three minutes remaining to put them up 6-1.
The Dutchwomen's defense killed two out of three penalties during
the match. Freshman goaltender Shenae Lundberg made her Union
debut, receiving her first career start and making 29 saves out of
35 shots faced.
Union is back in action at Ridder Arena again tomorrow, taking on
St. Cloud at 5:00 p.m. (EST). St. Cloud is now 0-1-0 on the
season.
