Bobcats Come Up Short in Top-10 Showdown
ERIE, Pa. – The No. 9 ranked Quinnipiac women’s ice
hockey team was defeated in its season opener by non-conference
opponent No. 8 Mercyhurst, 4-0, on Friday evening in Erie, Pa. The
Bobcats open the 2011-12 season with a 0-1 record, while Mercyhurst
improves to 1-0.
Mercyhurst jumped out to a 1-0 lead just under 10 minutes into
regulation, scoring a shorthanded goal from senior Bailey Bram. The
Lakers added a second goal before the first intermission, as senior
Kelley Steadman netted a power-play goal at the 17:11 mark into the
frame. On the score, freshman Caroline Luczak and sophomore
Christine Bestland were each credited with an assist.
The Lakers increased their lead to 3-0 on Bestland’s second
period score, coming at the 10:31 mark. Steadman and sophomore
Christie Cicero each earned an assist on the play.
Mercyhurst’s final goal of the contest came with just under
four minutes remaining in the third period, as junior Lauren Jones
scored off assists from senior Jess Jones and junior Gina
Buquet.
Junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) turned
away 30 shots in the loss, while her counterpart Hillary Pattenden
made 20 saves for Mercyhurst.
Forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) led Quinnipiac with
five shots in the game, followed by junior Brittany Lyons’
(Canton, Mass.) three shots. Overall, the Bobcats were outshot,
34-20.
Each team was whistled for four penalties in the contest,
The Bobcats look to rebound tomorrow afternoon when they face
Mercyhurst at 4 p.m. at Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa.
