Raiders Defeat Queen's in Final Exhibition Contest

HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/30/11) – The Colgate women's hockey team won its second and final exhibition game of the 2011-12 season when it defeated Queen's University, 4-3 at home.

Sophomore Taylor Volpe led the team with two goals while freshman Katie Case and junior Brittany Phillips scored one goal each. Case also had an assist in the game. The Raiders outshot Queen's, 26-13.

Colgate scored the opening two goals of the game, first at the 2:23 mark with an unassisted goal from Case and then at the six-minute mark by Volpe with help from Case. The early goals gave the team a 2-0 lead at the end of the first 20 minutes of play.

In the second frame, it was Queen's that was able to find a pair of goals at the 10:24 and 13:40 marks to tie the game at 2-2 going into the final period. An aggressive final 20 minutes of play resulted in an early goal for Queen's to give it the 3-2 advantage. But then an equalizing goal at the 6:02 mark from Phillips with an assist from freshman Melissa Kueber, led to an offensive surge by the Raiders. Their hard work was eventually rewarded with a fourth goal at the 16:48 mark from Volpe to win the game 4-3. Classmate Rachel Walsh had an assist in the game-winner.

Junior goaltender Kimberly Sass had nine saves in the game.

Colgate will open the 2011-12 season next weekend with a pair of road contests against New Hampshire and Northeastern on Friday, Oct. 7 and Saturday Oct. 8 respectively.
