No. 10 Big Green Blank Saints
Oct. 29: Dartmouth College goaltender Lindsay Holdcroft turned
in a 24-save performance on Saturday, backstopping the
nationally-ranked No. 10 Big Green's women's hockey team to a 1-0
shutout over St. Lawrence University at Appleton Arena.
The Saints fall to 3-3-2 (0-2-0) on the season, while Dartmouth
picks up its first win of the year and climbs to 1-1-1 (1-0-1).
"It certainly wasn't the weekend we were looking for, but both
Harvard and Dartmouth are disciplined and talented teams and we
didn't execute," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells.
"We'll be ready to play next weekend in two big conference games
for us."
Though Holdcroft posted the shutout, St. Lawrence rookie goalie
Carmen MacDonald had an excellent afternoon in net as well with a
28-save showing with only one blemish while her team was on the
penalty kill.
After a scoreless first period that saw Dartmouth outshoot the
Saints 9-6, both teams posted 12 shots in the second stanza.
Though St. Lawrence had its share of quality tries, it was the Big
Green who capitalized late in the period to take the 1-0
lead. Sasha Nanji fired a shot towards MacDonald from the
blue line that was partially blocked, but the puck bounced right to
Reagan Fischer in the slot. Fischer then quickly snapped a
low shot that caught MacDonald out of position for her first of the
year and the critical one-goal lead at 16:12.
The Saints nearly found themselves in a 3-0 hole after two periods,
as Fischer hit two pipes in the stanza. However, the score
remained 1-0 heading to the third period.
Dartmouth continued to work the puck in the St. Lawrence zone and
held an 8-6 edge in shots throughout the final frame. The
Saints worked in the final minute to get MacDonald off the ice in
favor of an extra skater, but the Big Green continued to shut down
their efforts. Though the home team would eventually get the
6-on-5 advantage, the timing was too late and the clock ran out on
a 1-0 Dartmouth win.
The Big Green finished with a 1-for-5 mark on the power play while
the Saints closed at 0-for-6 which included a pair of 5-on-3
tries.
The Saints will look to get back on track next weekend when the
team heads to Troy, NY on Friday, October 4 to take on Rensselaer
at 7:00pm.
