Bobcats Skate Past Union
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac women’s ice
hockey team skated to a convincing 5-1 win over ECAC Hockey
opponent Union on Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink. With the win,
the Bobcats improve to 2-0 in ECAC Hockey action and 3-5 overall,
while Union falls to 0-2 in ECAC Hockey and 2-7 on the season
overall.
Quinnipiac registered the game’s first score at the 4:20 mark
into the contest, as junior Breann Frykas (East St. Paul, Manitoba)
netted her first goal of the season on a slap shot from just inside
the blue-line. Sophomore Olivia Brackett (Coopersville, Mich.) and
senior Kate Wheeler (Oakville, Ontario), who had worked the puck
over to Frykas, were each credited with an assist on the score.
The Bobcats added to their lead with 4:11 remaining in the first
period on sophomore Amanda Colin’s (Burnsville, Minn.) first
goal of the season. Colin skated in with freshman Nicole Kosta
(Mississauga, Ontario) on a two-on-one advantage, bearing down on
Union’s junior goaltender Alana Marcinko. Kosta controlled
the puck on the attack until the last moment, before a clever dish
to Colin left the sophomore with an easy tap-in for the goal.
Junior Brittany Lyons (Canton, Mass.) was also credited with an
assist on the goal, earning her fourth helper of the year.
Quinnipiac extended its lead to 3-0 at the 13:05 mark into the
second period on sophomore Kelly Babstock’s (Mississauga,
Ontario) team-high fourth goal of the year. The play developed in
Quinnipiac’s defensive zone, as sophomore Shelby Wignall
(Hamilton, Ontario) received a pass from junior Felica Vieweg (Port
Orange, Fla.), who then poked it up ice to the open Babstock. The
Mississauga native took control of the puck, weaved her way around
the last Union defender, and wristed in the shot over
Marcinko’s blocker.
The Bobcats remained relentless on the attack in the third period
and scored two goals exactly 30 seconds separated from one another
to increase their lead to 5-0. Junior Kristen Eklund (Barrington,
R.I.) scored Quinnipiac’s first goal of the stanza just 1:06
minutes into the frame following a tremendous individual effort to
strip the puck from the Union defender. Eklund then took her time
before placing the puck over the shoulder of Marcinko for her first
tally of the season.
Senior Jordan Elkins (Wasilla, Alaska) followed with her second
goal in as many days, finding the back of the net at the 1:36 mark
of the third and final frame. Wheeler was credited with her second
assist of the game on the score.
Union added a goal of its own at the 6:03 mark of the third period
to bring the score to 5-1, on junior Emma Rambo’s first tally
of the year.
Junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) followed
up Friday’s shutout against Rensselaer with another solid
performance in net, turning away 19 shots on the afternoon.
Marcinko made 21 saves for Union, while senior Kate Gallagher
turned away three shots after she entered the game following
Quinnipiac’s fifth goal against Marcinko.
The Bobcats outshot the Dutchwomen, 29-to-20, while each team was
whistled for two penalties in the game.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Friday, Nov. 4 when it hosts Yale
at High Point Solutions Arena at 7 p.m.
