Princeton Earns Tie at RPI
TROY, N.Y. (10/29/11) - Junior Kelly Cooke scored early as the
Princeton women's hockey team played to a 1-1 draw with Rensselaer
on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Houston Field House.
Princeton nearly had the game but with 2:08 left Alisa Harrison
scored with help from Jill Vandergrift and Eleeza Cox.
Cooke gave Princeton the lead it would hold for nearly the entire
game at 3:42 of the first period. Senior Paula Romanchuk slid the
puck from the right post to junior Corey Stearns on the doorstep.
Stearns fired a shot at netminder Brianna Piper who made the save
but gave up the rebound to Cooke who was on the left side to put it
away.
Senior Rachel Weber kept her team in the lead, making 27 saves
before RPI managed to get one by her.
Eleeza Cox had a shot blocked shot was blocked and the puck reached
Vandergrift in the paint. She fired a shot at Weber who kept the
puck out of the net but couldn't control it as Harrison got her
stick on it and took a couple swings at it before getting it under
Weber and over the goal line.
RPI held a 31-25 edge in shots. Both teams were 0-for on the power
play.
Brianna Piper stopped 24 including one on an Olivia Mucha breakaway
with 1:25 left in regulation. Mucha sent a backhanded shot at Piper
who used a kick save to send the game into overtime.
Weber finished with 30 saves as she helps Princeton to a 2-1-1
overall record and an undefeated 1-0-1 mark in league play. The
Engineers move to 2-5-3 and 0-1-1 in the ECAC.
The Tigers return home next weekend, hosting Brown on Nov. 4 and
Yale on Nov. 5.
