Gedman’s Overtime Tally Propels Crimson Past Clarkson
POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Harvard defense came to the rescue in
its first overtime game of the season as sophomore defenseman
Marissa Gedman netted the game-winning goal just 1:32 into the
frame to give the Harvard women's hockey team a thrilling, 2-1,
overtime victory over Clarkson Saturday at Cheel Arena. Harvard
completes its second Clarkson/St. Lawrence series sweep in its last
three tries, and ups its record to 2-0-0 on the young season.
Clarkson had the first good look of the overtime period, but
Bellamy was once again solid, turning aside an early chance for the
hosts. A faceoff in the Clarkson zone sparked a Harvard push, but
the Golden Knights chipped the puck out to relieve the threat
temporarily. The chip found the stick of Michelle Picard near
mid-ice and a casual pass to Gedman sent the sophomore defenseman
up the ice. Gedman found some space just outside the right faceoff
circle, and her low slapshot beat Howe stickside for the
game-winner just 1:32 into the frame.
For the second night in a row, Harvard started its scoring in the
second period, netting its fourth power-play goal of the season at
the 5:42 mark of the frame. Jillian Dempsey controlled the puck
just in front of the blue line and passed to Marissa Gedman who
held for a second before wristing a pass to Josephine Pucci by the
left faceoff circle. Pucci didn't get all of the puck on her
one-timer, but the shot was enough to loft past Clarkson goalie
Erica Howe's right shoulder for a 1-0 lead.
The hosts answered with a power-play goal of their own, knotting
the score with just 35 seconds to play in the middle stanza. Hailey
Wood put home her second goal of the season, pushing the puck past
Laura Bellamy through a scrum in front of the net. After
outshooting the Golden Knights, 11-7, in the opening frame,
Clarkson zeroed in on its target in the second, outshooting the
Crimson, 11-5, in the period.
Both teams had good looks throughout the third period, but Bellamy
and Howe stayed true, turning aside every puck they saw in the
stanza. The Crimson took back the overall edge in shots with 11 to
Clarkson's eight in the frame, giving Harvard a 27-26 shots
advantage after regulation.
Gedman finished with two points on the evening, her second
multi-point game in as many contests, while Pucci netted her first
goal of the season and Dempsey collected her first helper of the
year. Bellamy was rock-solid in net, posting 25 saves in the win
for Harvard.
Harvard will take next weekend off from play and return to action
on the road against Colgate Nov. 11 in a 7 p.m. game.
