Clarkson's Streak Ends with OT Loss to Harvard
The Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team’s
unbeaten streak came to an end on Saturday afternoon as Harvard
edged the Golden Knights 2-1 in overtime in ECAC Hockey action at
Cheel Arena.
Clarkson, which entered the contest with the nation’s longest
unbeaten streak at seven games (4-0-3), suffered only its second
loss of the season to fall to 4-2-4 overall and to 0-1-1 in league
play.
Coming off a 7-1 victory at St. Lawrence on Friday, Harvard (2-0,
2-0) completed the weekend sweep in the North Country when Marissa
Gedman fired a shot through a screen from the right circle that
found the back of the net 1:32 into the extra session for the
game-winner. Michelle Picard assisted.
After a scoreless first period the teams traded power-play goals in
the middle frame for a 1-1 tie through 40 minutes. Harvard struck
first when Josephine Pucci redirected a shot by Jillian Dempsey at
5:42. With 35 seconds left in the period, Clarkson, skating on its
third consecutive power play, connected to tie the game. Sophomore
Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) took a pass at the right point from
junior defenseman Hailey Wood (Lethbridge, ALB) and fired a shot on
goal. Crimson goaltender Laura Bellamy made the initial save, but
could not control the bouncing puck. Junior Danielle Skirrow
(Trenton, ONT) crashed the net and knocked in the bouncing puck for
her fifth goal of the season.
The Crimson, who had the lone power play in the third period,
outshot the Knights 11-8 in the stanza, but strong goaltending from
Bellamy and Clarkson sophomore goaltender Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT)
kept the game tied through regulation.
Harvard outshot the Knights 29-26 and had both shots in overtime.
Howe posted 27 saves, while Bellamy recorded 25 stops. Both teams
were 1-of-3 on the power play.
Clarkson takes to the road next weekend playing at Capital District
rivals Union and Rensselaer.
