Crimson Topple Saints in League Opener
CANTON, N.Y. -- The Harvard University women's hockey team
trailed 1-0 after the first period, but scored seven unanswered
goals to rout St. Lawrence 7-1 at Appleton Arena on Friday night in
the 2011-12 ECAC Hockey opener for both teams.
The Saints fall to 3-2-2 on the year after being outshot 46-18
including 22-8 in the third period, while the Crimson win their
season opener in style, improving to 1-0-0 overall and in
conference.
"I was outcoached tonight, and they're a very disciplined team,"
said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "Harvard took it to us in
all facets of the game and kept the pedal down all night."
The visitors came out strong in the first period, but St. Lawrence
first-year goalie Carmen Ma3cDonald kept them off the scoreboard
with eight saves including three breakaway tries. Her play
allowed the Saints to take a 1-0 lead late in the stanza while the
team was on a 5-on-3 power play. Sophomore Rylee Smith won an
offensive zone face-off to senior Alley Bero who slung a pass along
the blue line to junior Brooke Fernandez. The Bloomfield, CT
native unleashed a blistering slap shot that beat Harvard goalie
Laura Bellamy for her third goal of the year and a 1-0 St. Lawrence
lead at 18:22 of the first.
The Crimson wasted little time in leveling the score at 1-1 only
1:24 into the second period, as Lyndsey Fry lifted a shot under the
cross bar to tie the game. Marissa Gedman followed at 4:30,
putting the visitors on top for good as her shot through traffic
got past a screened McDonald for a 2-1 lead. Harvard would
push their advantage to 4-1 at the end of two thanks to power play
goals from Jillian Dempsey and Fry.
After being outshot 16-5 in the second, the Saints continued to
struggle to earn offensive chances on Bellamy. Instead,
Harvard scored their third straight power play goal at 6:49 of the
final period to take a 5-1 lead, as Dempsey netted her second of
the game.
The Crimson would put the finishing touches on a dazzling
performance with goals from Samantha Reber and Gina McDonald at
16:33 and 19:46, respectively, to win the game 7-1.
MacDonald closed with 39 saves in the loss for the Scarlet and
Brown, while Bellamy totaled 18 stops for Harvard. The
Crimson finished 3-of-7 on the power play while the Saints were
1-of-7.
St. Lawrence will look to bounce back tomorrow, Saturday, October
29 when it hosts nationally-ranked No. 10 Dartmouth at Appleton
Arena at 4:00pm.
