Bobcats Earn First League Victory
TROY, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team earned
its first ECAC Hockey victory of the season with a 2-0 shutout
victory over Rensselaer on Friday afternoon at Houston Field House.
With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 2-5 overall (1-0 ECAC Hockey),
while Rensselaer falls to 2-5-2 overall and begins ECAC Hockey
action with a 0-1 record.
Freshman forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) and senior
defender Jordan Elkins (Wasilla, Alaska) each scored for the
Bobcats, while junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge,
Ontario) earned her second shutout of the season and 16th overall
clean sheet of her career.
Quinnipiac asserted itself early in the contest, displaying hard
work in the offensive zone with relentless forechecking through the
first five minutes of action. The Bobcats' hard work paid dividends
at the 9:11 mark into the first frame, when Babstock notched her
third goal of the season. Babstock, whose initial shot was saved by
Rensselaer's freshman goaltender Kelly O'Brien, collected her own
rebound and fired the puck over the freshman's glove-hand to give
the Bobcats the 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats kept the intensity high following the goal and refused
to allow Rensselaer to even the score for the remainder of the
frame. Sophomore goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge,
Ontario) made eight saves in the first stanza for Quinnipiac.
Both teams remained scoreless in the second stanza, however
Quinnipiac's best scoring chance in the period came in the 13th
minute when Babstock and senior Bethany Dymarczyk (Hamden, Conn.)
skated in with a two-on-one advantage. Babstock laid off the puck
for Dymarczyk, whose one-timer was glove saved by O'Brien.
Rensselaer created multiple scoring chances of their own in the
second period, however Vigilanti denied the Engineers time after
time, making 10 saves in the stanza. Vigilanti finished with 21
overall saves in the game, while her counterpart O'Brien made 22
saves in net for the Engineers.
Quinnipiac extended its lead to 2-0 on Elkins' first goal of the
season at the 6:43 mark into the third period. Elkins received a
pass from sophomore Amanda Colin (Burnsville, Minn.), who slid the
puck up from the corner to a stationary Elkins, who had parked
herself just inside the blue line. Elkins took a look at the net
before unleashing a slap-shot that rocketed by an overmatched
O'Brien. Colin was credited with her first assist of the season on
the goal.
Each team went scoreless on its power-play opportunities, as the
Bobcats went 0-for-5 while the Engineers went 0-for-4.
Quinnipiac returns to the ice tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 29 when the
team travels to Schenectady, N.Y. to face Union at 3 p.m.
