Cornell Pounces on Yale
ITHACA, N.Y. – Fans at Lynah Rink had plenty to celebrate
Friday night as the No. 3 Cornell women's ice hockey team put up
nine goals on visiting Yale in a 9-0 shutout. All but three skaters
scored a point for the Big Red.
Amanda Mazzotta earned her first shutout of the season thanks to
her 16 saves, and the Cornell offense did the rest in putting up 65
shots on Yale's two goaltenders.
The Big Red (2-0, 2-0 ECAC Hockey) came out of the gate slow
against Yale (0-3, 0-1) but didn't stay off the scoresheet for
long. After 12 minutes of superior hockey, Cornell finally struck
12:23 into the first period when senior captain Rebecca Johnston
banked in a goal from behind the net. Freshman Jillian Saulnier got
her first career assist on the goal and senior captain Amanda Young
earned the second assist.
From there, the floodgates opened.
The Big Red scored 29 seconds later when freshman Monika Leck got
her first career goal on assists from Kendice Ogilvie and Emily
Fulton. Leck's teammates picked the puck out of the net and gave it
to her to honor her first goal.
Less than two minutes later, Brianne Jenner scored her second goal
of the season, and four minutes after that Johnston added her
second of the night.
The second period saw more of the same, and Saulnier started it for
the Big Red by scoring her fifth career goal in just two games.
Then, a mere 13 seconds apart, Lauriane Rougeau and Jenner scored
for Cornell to make it 7-0. Senior captain Catherine White tallied
her first goal of the season three minutes later.
The Cornell offense quieted a bit in the final period, but White
cleaned up a shot by Hayleigh Cudmore that went through Yale's
goalie's legs and trickled toward but not over the goal line.
When it was all said and done, Johnston had two goals and two
assists, Saulnier had a goal and two assists, Jenner had two goals
and two assists, and Rougeau had a goal and an assist.
One game after putting up 64 shots on Colgate, Cornell surpassed
that lofty number with 65 shots on Yale keepers Genny Ladiges and
Jaimie Leonoff.
The Big Red had not scored nine goals since the second game of last
season, a 9-1 victory against Robert Morris.
All but two players for Cornell are now on the positive side of the
plus/minus rating, and the two who aren't are at zero. The team has
combined for 15 goals, 28 assists and 43 points in just two games,
and the top line of Saulnier, Jenner and Johnston has 23 points to
its name already.
Cornell continues its home weekend on Saturday with a 3 p.m. game
against Brown.
