Colgate Battles Brown to Overtime Tie
HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/28/11) – The Colgate women's hockey
team played its first overtime game of the season on Friday night
when it tied with ECAC Hockey opponent, Brown, 1-1 in overtime.
Freshman Miriam Drubel scored her second goal of the season in the
third period to tie the game and force it into a scoreless overtime
period. The Raiders now have a 0-1-1 league mark.
Both teams came out to an attacking start in the opening period in
an attempt to get an early lead. Colgate (3-3-1, 0-1-1 ECAC Hockey)
soon held the shooting advantage, coming close with a shot from
junior Brittany Phillips in the fourth minute that hit the pipe. As
the half progressed the game became more physical, resulting in a
penalty on Brown midway through the period to give the Raiders an
extra skater. Colgate was able to take a series of shots on goal,
with three in a row coming from freshman Katie Case, but could not
find the back of the net. The Raiders continued to outshoot Brown
throughout the rest of period, finding several close scoring
opportunities and gaining a second power play advantage in the
closing minutes, but at the end of the first 20 minutes, the game
remained scoreless.
Despite being outshot 15-5 by Colgate in the first frame, the Bears
came out attacking the net aggressively. A penalty on the Raiders
six minutes in allowed Brown to carry its shooting momentum but it
could not get past senior Kimberly Sass who made some impressive
stops. Colgate then found a pair of scoring opportunities that came
close to putting the team on the scoreboard. The first was on a
fast break by sophomore Jocelyn Simpson, who skated down the middle
of the ice but had the puck stolen and knocked away by Brown's
goalie, Aubree Moore. The second chance came minutes later when
Phillips won a faceoff and passed the puck up the ice to freshman
Melissa Kueber who then used some fancy stick work to get past the
last defender but was denied by Moore on a save. As the clock wound
down, Brown found some threatening opportunities on a power play
but could not capitalize, resulting in another dry period. The
Bears outshot Colgate 12-5 in the second frame and had three power
play advantages.
The Bears then came out to an offensive start in the final period
once again, putting pressure on the Raiders' net and eventually
finding a goal at the 3:27 mark from a shot that slipped through
Sass' pads and was knocked in by Katelyn Landry to take the 1-0
lead. Colgate then picked up its pace, wasting no time to generate
some offense of its own and came close with a puck sliding across
the crease but nobody could get a touch on it. The Raiders
continued to play hard and earned their third power play advantage
of the game midway through the period, but despite some great shots
on goal, they could not find an equalizer. Another Brown penalty
three minutes later put the Raiders with an extra skater once again
however, this time they were able to capitalize at the 12:17 mark
when Phillips slipped the puck to sophomore Shannon Doyle, who then
knocked it just wide of the right post to Drubel, who one-timed it
past Moore to tie the game at 1-1. The equalizing goal increased
the intensity of the game as both teams fought to find a
game-winner in the final minutes. Colgate then committed a roughing
penalty giving Brown the power play advantage for the final two
minutes of the period, but some important saves by Sass sent the
game into overtime.
The Raiders started the overtime period with an offensive surge,
creating the first opportunities of the period with five straight
shots. Brown was then able to move the puck down the ice but failed
to take a single shot due to some strong defense from Colgate. The
Raiders continued to fight for a goal, coming close in the final
thirty seconds of the game with a pass to Simpson at the top of the
crease but she could not get the shot off, resulting in the team's
first overtime tie of the season.
Kimberly Sass had 26 saves in the game for Colgate while Moore had
36 for the Bears.
